Got a great deal on a used R1200R. 3000 miles new!

It's black, it's fast, it's smooth, I'm thrilled and I've got a question:

One key? Did you guys only get one key with your new bike? The owners manual says "spare" key. I wanta spare key.. Oh boy I guess its off to the dealer for a mega-buck spare key.

Toolkit, no toolkit, after searching the site and finding out the stock kit sucks, I guess I'll make up a toolkit on my own.

The Parabellum Scout Fairing is in my future. And some BMW bags. Kinda R100S like.

Now to sell the Duc and the R1100S...

Congrats sandy! What kind of deal did you get for a used one? Add $62.50 to your deal for each key you want! Yeah the stock tool kit is way way way lame ..get your own..whitehorsepress.com has some nice ones for not a lot of cash.

Apparently BMW are now making you pay extra for spare keys

My dealer kept my spare key and taped it to the inside of my file at the dealership. I don't know why they did this because I paid cash for it. Maybe they did it in case I forget to leave my key during service. I had two keys made because I hid one on the bike in case I lost one while out.

The tool kit is lacking so I just added mostly Torx sockets and some wrenches.

Yep - you get two, the main key and a small plastic wallet or pocket key which both have a built in transponder I am told so any key you have made / supplied by anyone other tha BMW will not work. You also get a little disc which has a number on it so that you can order replacement keys.

Yep just one key. Only thing importent in the toolkit is probably the tool to open your oilfillercap at the cilinder head, so you will be able to fill the oil when ever that's needed.

I got a cool bit of personal bling in the form of a GS tool which has an oil cap tool and a bottle opener. Very handy.

I have seen quotes of $62.50. I stopped at BMW of Manhattan a few weeks back and was quoted (in horror) $106 for a R12R key. Does this sound right, what have others paid or been quoted?

Well it seems the word Horror and BMW of Manhattan usually come up in the same sentence very often. They have good people there but something is usually amiss there though I doubt the workers set the key prices but who knows? Google Max BMW..they charge 57 for the plastic and 59 for the metal key..they can get it in a day and send it to you for a few bucks. Also there's the Cross Country BMW in NJ that can do the same thing and they are in metuchen..if you have the key number you can do it over the phone.

I believe BMW's rules for ordering the key is - they have to see you, the registration and the bike all together. Otherwise - what would keep a thief from copying the VIN (easily seen on the steering head) and ordering one?

I imagine a dealer who sold you the bike might be able to justify ordering one based on your purchase.. but I know on the car side - they are quite strict on this rule.

Don, I have seen reports on the net (so therefore it must be true ) of dealers ordering keys for known customers with the vin#. I have no direct experince, I ordered one to be picked up at delivery, very salty little sting it was.
