Can you identify this?

Can someone tell me what this is?
I know the photo doesn't give you a good perspective of size, but it's about 6-7 inches long. Has a tail like a eel, hind legs like a frog and a head like a............. catfish? Definite bottom dweller. Can't be a tadpole, right? Aren't those really small? I need to know what this is.

You're right..It's not a tadpole..
..Isn't it a salamanda or something like that....What do they taste like?

Fortunately, I did not have to eat this thing - but I bet it tastes like chcken.
Forgot to mention - it lives in water.

Thanks - I just needed a "word" headstart to do a google search on it. Creepy weird thing. I'll add it to my list of new things seen for my Arkansas trip report.

Interesting.
The axylotl (axolotl - aka Mexican Walking Fish) and the mudpuppy are the same creature.
BUT
Bullfrog tadpoles can be 15cm long. (15 cm = 5.9 inches)
Gyps, go back and capture a live sample.

Here's another view of him:
and I have one from the other side (but it ain't pretty
).
Maybe it wasn't a mudpuppy afterall, because it didn't have any front legs and it didn't have the maroon gills.
And just for the fun of it..........
answer this one: which would be harder to 'catch'? A mudpuppy, a bullfrog tadpole, or an Axoloti - or this thing?
