Those of you who have purchased aftermarket seats. which did you get and why?

or if any of you use other forms of making the seat more comfy let me know.

I have used the Alaska Sheepskin Butt Pad and it was an improvement on the stock seat. Now I have a Sargent seat and for me it is perfect.

+1 I have a Sargent seat and use a dead sheep with it. No complaints

Sargent. Try and find one used, as they are fairly pricey when new.

Somebody posted a suggestion to use an IKEA sheepskin, good for both rider & passenger. I picked on up in Hamilton last week and tried it out today. $40 Canadian and it seems to work pretty good; but if I found any aftermarket seat in a yard sale that would fit the RR I would get them.

Sargent works well....I also have the dead sheep skin, helps but the Sargent does a good job on its own.
I'm not sure it matters what upgrade you go to, after a couple of hours the arse needs a break!!

Russell--don't waste your time on pretenders.

I have used a Rick Mayer on my '04 R for over a year and 20,000 miles and really like it. I would definitely buy another if/when I trade bikes.

I am at the end of one leg of a 3K trip and staying with a friend for a few days. I bought a used Sargent from this site because of the reccomendations found here. I also cut my own dead sheep and brought it with me. After two 500 days, I have to say I am sore. I was sore at about the 300 mile mark each day and could only stand about 75-100 miles before having to stop.
Understand that I fully believe that the Sargent is a marked improvement over the stock seat. I also am not going to stop my ride becuase of the discomfort. That being said, my new seat would not allow me to get an iron butt. Maybe I'm just soft.
I also wore bicycling shorts. Any more suggestions???

A marked improvement over the stock tall seat, but I still need to get off at least once every hour.

When I first got my R, I did a 14hr day on the stock tall seat. Sore for sure but the best stock BMW seat I ever took a trip on.

Bought a used Sargent and it is much more comfortable. As for long rides, I use polypropelene(spelling??) compression shorts/bike shorts but without the padding. Padding tends not to work well on a flat MC seat, atleast for me. It forces the padding into a tight spot I'd just as soon not have things stuffed into.

If it is hot I'll wear double layers of the shorts, 1 a smaller underware type with open weave. Not sure where I found these. This removes moisture and allows some air flow. Same idea as the sheep skins and I do like those. Looking to add one to the R or maybe a bead seat, they let in more air. Also, use some powder it will help with the diaper rash!

But if you haven't already done it, you'll need to build up your backside from lots of riding. It will get more comfortable or bearable, not sure which, with time in the saddle. Just like horse back riding until you do it a lot you are going to get sore.

I am investigating a new seat and checked with Rick Mayer of Mayer Cycle products and he said with my weight 270lbs and the 1150R which is very narrow, that the best seat is a Russell Day Long Saddle. That was his dad's design that his dad sold to Russell. He said he would not sell me his seat because it would not work well for the 1150R. Now that being said, if I had a 1150GS he WOULD sell me his designed seat.

I'd like to cast another vote for Rick Mayer. I also weigh 270 and was a little above that when he made the saddle for me, so his viewpoint must have changed in the last three or four years. I'm still delighted with that saddle.

I recently completed a 6,500 mile trip using an Airhawk and sheepskin. There was some soreness, but it was manageable. I found that by adding or removing air from the Airhawk I could change the feel and minimize pressure points.

Bicycle shorts are a good idea. Also, REI makes some moisture-wicking boxer briefs that worked great.

I have a Corbin seat that I bought used on this board. People seem to either love or hate Corbins - I really like mine.

I have also used an Airhawk (another purchase off this Board). It is OK, but mostly stays in a box on the shelf.

Whatever seat you decide on, get the Alaska Sheepskin Butt Pad. It makes a + difference to any seat.
