I think the answer will be short..very short.
I think the first one came out in 2000 and in 03 or 04 they went to twin spark, s/s brake lines, and maybe a couple different engine parts...that's about it.
Maybe things like clear indicator lenses, new screen designs and grips.
Oh yeah...colors...diffrent paint colors came out on different years
Why change something that's perfect..

I think the 1150 first appeared in calendar year 2001. I bought an R1100R brand new in October 2000 and remember seeing the 1150 about 4 months later and wish I had held off. Not a great fan of the oil radiators sitcking out like a pair of bad ears but, thankfully, have pretty much gotten used to them. I'm interested in hearing if the extra 50cc and the addition of a 6th gear have been useful. On my long distance trips, I'm usually cruising at 80-90mph and taching about 4600 RPM for this.

R1150R vs R1150R vs R1150R...
I'm looking to get back into motorcycling... and am also interested in a R1150R.
I've found what looks to be a couple of good 2004's on the market in my area. One is a deeep red color, the other is a dark grey/blue color. Is there any place that lists the colors that were availble in the USA for the 2004s?
I rented a Buell XB12SS Lightning over the weekend... very fun and powerful. However, I want a bike that is more comfortable/versatile for long trips.
Thanks - Mike

2004: Black, Piedmont Red, Silver, Blue.
Dark Ferro came in 2005, I think.
The dark ferro has unique lettering by the seat, like a military spray paint job, with an all black engine.
Here is one:

I have it on excellent authority that Piedmont Red is the fastest, and most comfortable color.

The quickest way to tell a model year is by the spark plug covers on the heads. These are 2004-05 covers. 2001-2003 have plug covers all the way across the cylinder head.

ahem.
Here is what I know about the subject;
The 1150 came on the market for the 2002 MODEL year (not calendar year). It was also the year of the six-speed tranny and hydraulic clutch
The 1150 with dual/spark came on the market for 2004 MODEL year; was created to meet tougher EU emission standards, had nothing to do with the surge issue (says BMW, probably true)
My 2002 surges slightly & occasionally (low rpm 30-35-40 mph), not a big deal, it reminds me to change gears and up the r's.
What makes the most sense to me about the surge issue is the explanation of the lean fuel mixture at low rpm's which the standard fuel map provides.
Different mapping (Techlusion) = richer mixture = no surge = lower fuel economy.
Check in at motorcycle.com for a great review of the 2002. It is the article that made me call the dealer and place my order March of '02.
Now at 6 seasons and 56000 miles I am still a very happy rider.

"none.nada.thank you."
I have a '98 r1100r runs graits, never suged. I bought it 3 years ago and am very happy with it. One good thing about BMW's is that most peopel take good cair of them and there are many low mileage used bike out there. got mine for $4,500 with 27,000m. best $4,500 I ever spent.
I love the dark ferro bikes.

Re: R1150R vs R1150R vs R1150R...
I had the same question when I srarted to look in 2005 for an R. I rode a red 2002 with a Two Brothers exhaust and I was hooked. Ended up with a silver 2004 off ebay. At the time I remembered seeing a comparison of stock single and twin spark torque curves. The single curve was flat to slightly declining from 3 to 4,000 RPM. The twin spark had a positive slope from 3-4,000 RPM. These curves could of been different for a number of reasons, but I thought it made sense at the time. When I saw this post, I went looking for these curves again and can't find what I remembered.reyb wrote:Could someone list the differences between the different year R1150Rs?
