India?

Post by chris »

Anyone been to India on a bike? I'm about to book a trip to ride in the Himalayas for 2 weeks on an Enfield Bullet next year and would love to hear if anyone has already had a crack.

I spent a few years over in India, owning 2 Enfields while there. I was based down in the south. Never ridden in the Himalayas though!

It might be worth checking which year/model Bullet you will be riding, as only a few late models have the gear lever on the left side of the bike. Not only are early levers on the right, but the location of gears is upside down. This is not a big problem, and you will adapt quickly, but it can be tricky in chaotic Indian traffic. Mountain roads should be OK. They can be a bit temperamental, but if there's a mechanic travelling with you or you have a little knowledge you will be fine. The carburetor is also much improved in later models (constant vacuum), which ensures easy kickstarts.

If you haven't checked already, have a look at royalenfield.com and see the specs of current models sold in India.

Cheers, the ones they provide are cack-handed as you describe. Bit of adjusting needed, will be odd braking with the left foot! There's a mechanic comes along so no worries about breaking down. Looking forward to the experience.

Chris

Not sure what I can tell you... never been on an organised tour, but do know most tours take their own mechanic and support vehicle. What tour is it? Where are you heading? What month etc...

I have recently entered a few images on the Great Rides section of this forum if you care to view the hazards.

PS Any questions PM me.

Chris, judging from GungaDin's slideshow, you're a very brave man indeed.

Hi GD,
it's either enduro himalaya or blazing trails. I think blazing trails involves a bit less sleeping rough so am favouring that at the moment! I just want to have the experience of being in that landscape on that bike, only worry I have is that I have no head for heights and I know some of the roads have precipitous drops alongside them AND there are some wooden 'rope' bridges to cross but I'm looking on this as the chance of a lifetime to experience something entirely new to me.
It'll be in the Himachal Pradesh, Shimla to Manali and there will be a mechanic and ambulance with medic along too. It all looks well organised and I think a sensible introduction to maybe buying a bike in Delhi taking off on my own at some point in the future. I go next June so one year to get ready! :D

Oh, yeah. I rode a Royal Enfield in April in Coimbatore. Once I put the footage on YouTube I'll let you know.

Traffic is crazy over there. No discernable following of laws, just a general understanding that you'll yield to someone when needed and you can sort of expect the same of others

Look forward to it! Seems to be the general concensus that anything can and will happen!

Chris,

There's a great guy called 'nomad' on the BIKE (UK magazine) forum who's linked to his experience of Enduro India '04. He seems like a good bloke & has done a nice write-up with pics here:
