Air filter replacement? Tried the search feature but WOW...

I tried searching out "air filter" in the search box and got nearly 1500 results, and after scrolling through 5 pages of posts not related to air filters in any way, I decided to run for help...

In short, what's the procedure for removing/replacing the air filter? Do I actually have to lift the tank to access it? Any help appreciated, even if you just point me towards the info that's already here somewhere in this vast jungle of information.

Mike, the following are links to a few repair manuals. BTW, to replace the air filter, you don't have to lift the tank but it sure makes it easier (just lift the rear portion a few inches).

After you lift the tank a little, getting the lid off is a lot easier than getting it back on. Be sure to get the lid almost vertical, insert the two tabs into their slots, then push hard to the front of the bike while pivoting it down into place. The problem is the ridge that serves to locate the lid where it belongs interferes with installing the lid. The standard trick is to grind down the two tabs to about 60% of original length or equal to the wall thickness of the side of the airbox that it plugs into. Having the fueltank off or highly elevated makes the job easier. Grinding down the tabs makes it even easier.
This Picture shows how short to make the two tabs on the lid. The pic was used to relocate the diagnostic plug to make more room for storage under the seat. Here's Another Pic showing the plug move.

Did mine the other week and when you lift the rear of the tank there's a higher postion for the tank reataining bolt you can use to prop it up (this is in the manual but if you don't have one...). Leaves both hands free to remove the filter. I found that I could get it out OK without taking the lid off the airbox so didn't run into re-installation problems. Don't forget to loosen the oil coolers before you lift the tank!
