Re: Corbin seat - about to pull the trigger

Post by phorcys »

Hello, everybody. First post for me, but thought I'd chime in.

Just got mine in this week. It's a bit "longer" in the seat than the stock seat and noticeably wider, especially when I reach for the pavement. I had the same problem with latching, but a bit of tweaking, a slight forward cant of the half of the latch on the seat and it dutifully locked in place, no more than about 10 minutes fiddle-time involved. I've only got about 100 miles on it so far, but no complaints. It's a "firm" seat, but not what I'd call hard by any stretch. Time will tell as I head west for CO over Labor Day. Big ride coming after that is to FL in October. So far, my capsule review would be "yes".

Also picked up a Ztechnik Vstream for it. It's a bit different being behind a windscreen that large, but sure is nice rolling down the super-slab at speed and I imagine will be a lifesaver when I head back to my brother's in December.

In my opinion, the corbin seat for this bike sucks. I just sent back my second one and I will demand a refund. The seat was not even close to fitting properly, I took pics and sent them to corbin, they said that is not right, send it back. That is after waiting 6 weeks to get it. I sent it back and 7 weeks later, they send me the same seat back. Now I am pissed. I will never use them again. The seat on my 1100s from corbin fit better that the stock. The 1200r, it is not even close. Rick meyer, here i come.

Hopefully you paid with a credit card that will support chargebacks. Corbin in the past has had a policy that every seat is "custom" and not returnable, even if you buy it off their truck at a rally. That hasn't made them really popular at times..

After I sent the picture with the issue on the nose, Corbin promptly responded to my emails and said that they would rework it to make it right. Today I come home to see a notice on my door that the UPS guy was there to pick up the seat. Now, that's what I call good customer service.
If you're on the fence about a Corbin due to their reputation, I'd say go for it!
Snippage..

Oliver - any update on the Corbin fit problem? Was this ever resolved to your satisfaction with Corbin? Inquring minds want to know.. :-)

Congrats also on the raffle win!

Don,

Corbin sent the UPS guy to pick up the seat, but I asked them to wait until fall/winter as I don't want to miss it until then.
I pulled the leather around the corner a bit and have the fit issue almost resolved myself (enough that it won't bother me until I sent it in). So, I stand by my earlier receommendation of Corbin and can only give positive feedback on their customer service.

Thanks for the congrats on the win - I never win anything, but since I had an Enduro instructor stay at my house for three days I wanted to check out off-roading and here's a great way to start.

Rgds,

If you're interested the part number is: 63 13 7 708 048.
In addition you'll also need to order the retrofit wiring kit 71 60 7 711 284 (1 kit covers 4 blinkers). My buddy wasn't sure if the kit covers 1 bike or 1 pair, so since it covers one bike, I have an extra wiring kit that I'd sell for what I got into it ($30 incl. shipping in CONUS).
Those part numbers don't come up on the various dealer websites. From which dealer did you purchase them?

Guys thoaght that I would jump in on this subject, alittle late in the game I know but... sorry just joined up. It was good to see your gallery on the corbin and get your thoaghts. If you think corbin has a fit issue you should see my Rick Mayer . As far as service , he is not to helpful maybe because I am on the east coast and cannot just drive in . Any one wants photos before jumping down that hole I have paid $500 for that small satisfaction. I hve to do something and the corbin seems to be the only alternative., or rework the seat myself.

What is the matter with your Rick Meyer seat? I like mine just fine. Maybe I got lucky or you were unluky. It is the first dissatisfaction of this sort I have heard of.
Do you have pictures?

A bit better way to share photos on the forum is to open a free Photobucket account (www.photobucket.com) - it allows you to easily embed them in a forum, or send a URL in an email.

I think we'd all be interesting in seeing what problems you ran into.

My Rick Mayer seat is a POS too. I've already gone into excruciating detail in another thread, but mine is ungluing from the inside just like yours and forming ugly ridges along the side. I already had to send it back once to have the cover tacked on properly (I made the decision to do that 30 seconds after opening the box and seeing my expensive new seat.) Plus, I sent him my standard-height seat and told him not to make it lower, and he sent me back a "low" seat-pan. Nice.

Rick Mayer is no joy to work with. He is an insufferable know-it-all, and he runs a disorganized shop. If you want to pay $500 for a high school home-ec quality seat, be my guest. I'm waiting for Sergeant (sp?).

Cheers, Tom Marincic

Tom
Thank you for your post . I knew that mine was not an isolated incident.
With the BMW motorcycles I have purchased from my local dealer , I have been impressed and have loved my bikes but it is BMW as a parent company and thier service people and dealers that give my R1200R it's quality. Having said that and forgeting for the moment the hacker work Rick Mayer sent me, dealing with him was the most unpleasant and unprofessional experience I have had in 30 years of motorcycling. I have been treading softly trying not to offend him or take offence by his arrogant way. From a buisness stand point they lost my application in the production schedual 6 weeks after taking payment. 2 weeks after production date they finally shipped after many calls. Then after many emails and a delicate dance he agreed to repair the sides but insists that the comfort is my problem , so much for ajustments, and that the passanger pillion problem was because of my wifes jealous nature. Hell I did not tell him that I was married. Finally resolved to eat my pride so as to get the seat right he sent an email asking for the stock seat I had sent 6 weeks prior . I mailed him the FedEx tracking # AGAIN with his signature of receit and realized that they were absolutly clueless as to what was going on in thier buisness. This and the quality of his work for me made me realize that I was on my own and that I love my R12R too much to put junk on it.
For all of you that are satisfied with Rick Mayer's way, I beg your tolerance. But I believe that $500 of frustration gives me some voice to warn that we on the internet and East coast , can read and should not be dismissed.
Time for me to drive down a new road. I look forward to sharing with you the many great things that the boxer brings me to and to hear of yours.
Oliver thanks for the gallery post of your Corbin, very helpful.

I made my mind up, after 2 corbin seats that where not even close to fitting properly, that is would go with Rick Meyer. After seeing these post on there seats, that thought is gone. So now what? Wait for sargent, Bill Meyer, russell day long? Anymore stories or thoughts on these seat makers. Thanks.

I got myself a Sargent seat. Had to wait five weeks for it. I am very happy with it. I popped it right in. No problem. Very comfortable. I can do miles and miles on it. I did not order the back seat as i always ride solo.

Did you have to send them your seat?
When I inquired they said that they'd only offer foam modification and not a complete seat. AFAIK, that hasn't changed.
That's why I decided to go with Corbin, as I didn't have downtime, nor worry about being without a seat if the modification didn't work out.

I thought Sargent was not ready to take orders for our bike until later this year.
So you are saying we can now order a Sargent Seat?

When did you order?
How long did you have to wait?
Did you have to send them your exisitng seat?
Which model did you order?
Any Pictures?

Yes lots of questions, but all good... :D :D :D

Thanks

Yeah, my experience exactly. I sent them an order with a deposit in early October, waited for weeks and weeks, no seat. I call them, and they say they never built a seat because I didn't send a deposit, so I send them the canceled check, wait some more. I get the seat in December, and it's grotesque, so I have to ship it back at my own expense. Rick later claims they never lost my deposit. All the problems are on my end, none on his. Now I have a low seat, and my legs are bent too much at the knee. It's ungluing, and it looks like crap on one side. It IS more comfortable, I admit, but all in all I'd rather have torn up 5 Franklins while standing in a cold shower.

YMMV, Tom
