I just fell into some elf pegs (actually sparky pegs) for very cheap. The quality is great. REALLY well done. Very solid, considering what the attach to.

Not actually a BMW part though, they are made here in Iowa, and are designed by the head mechanic at Ginas BMW in Iowa City

I havent asked him why they are so damned expensive though.

Feet on the cylinders puts you in a very bad position if an emergency avoidance maneuver is required when an obstacle pops up fast or even worse if an accident happens.

Ouch!

I never do it. I sit on the passenger seat, both feet still on the pegs with the controls, if I need to stretch.

J-pegs are the stuff

J-pegs are the way to go. My knees are in such bad shape, I must stretch them out, even on short trips.

After about an hour or so, my knees start to burn. The only remedy I've found so far is to stop for a few minutes. I've tried the "feet on the heads" but it seems dangerous and the position doesn't allow enough relief.

Nobody's mentioned the obvious. Just get a set of your preferred engine bars and use them to mount whatever sort of peg or floorboard you want in order to stretch out. That was my intent with the guards, but since I've added the Alaskan pad, my knees last through the whole commute.
