Jeff - be careful. I'm glad you, your wife, and your bike are all okay. We all know how exhilirating a new machine is. There are few things as pleasant as bathing in the glow of bonding to a new bike. I'm glad that wasn't marred too badly by that idiot who side-swiped you.

Thanks for the concern. I can assure you that my wife, the MT and I are all OK. The more I think about it, the more I have to take some responsability, at least for the inspiration. I had just finished having a spirited (but straight line) run with a TL1000 down an empty avenue when this RX7 guy tried to join in the fun without any warning. I take the whole thing as a sign to back off a little.

Must sell my FJR and import one of those MT's. Any word on if/when we'll get them in the states? Eh, who am I kidding... I have to farkle every motorcycle I own until it doesn't look anything like the original. I'd just mess up the clean lines of that sexy thing.

fnfalman, don't forget that the torque is all you get. If the rider waits around for the HP bump at the end, he shifted way too late. I personally love the all torque feeling, but it may not be for everyone.

528 lbs. It weighs almost exactly the same as my ABS Roadster, but the extra stiff frame and low weight bias makes it feel lighter.

I've seen the mods you had on the Roadster. I haven't seen what you've done with your FZR, but I assume similar activity.

The good news is there is simply nowhere to put stuff ont he MT. This could save you lots of money!

This is the bike Harley should be making. This is the bike Yamaha SHOULD BE EXPORTING TO THE U.S.

I don't care about top end on this thing. Hell, it probably goes at least 120-MPH maxxed out.

I'll bet I can carve some tight twisties with it and just use the torque to do some rear wheel sliding like a bit of trail throttle oversteer in a big torque car.

Jeff - TAKE IT EASY on that new bike - I lived in Tokyo for two years and Tokyo traffic is not the place for street racing, and street racing is not the activity to engage in with your dear wife on board. Also, if they have to activate the EMS system, you may be out of luck, as they view ressucitation differently due to religious and cultural beliefs. This may be changing, but I would not assume that they could or would bring you back from "the other side" in a Japanese hospital.

Yamaha is pitching its monstrous 1670cc naked bike as the spiritual successor to the V-Max, with a host of accessories and tuning parts.
The tech specs are impressive – nothing else outside the cruiser world has a motor this big.
And Yamaha claims the 1670cc V-twin in the MT-01 produces a massive 110ftlb of torque – that’s 50 per cent more than an R1, and will also produce 90bhp @ 4750rpm.
This massive torque allows the MT01 to run impossibly tall gearing – at 60mph in top it’ll be revving at just under 2300rpm!
The motor is based on the Road Star Warrior – a huge cruiser which was imported into the UK in 2003 only. Yamaha has made special efforts to get more performance from the motor.
The cylinder head has been reworked, with reprofiled inlet tracts and exhaust ports to improve gas-flow.
The crank and flywheel have also been lightened to get the engine revving quicker. Yamaha claims it has shaved 20kg off the motor.
The bike also features the first EXUP valve ever fitted to a V-twin machine. Positioned where the two exhausts meet in the 2-1-2 system the valve opens and closes within the pipe to change its diameter, optimising torque.
The huge megaphone exhaust silencers are made of titanium – the first time a non-sports bike has had them fitted as standard.
The chassis also has sports bike influences with a heavily-braced alloy swingarm made as long as possible for stability. The swingarm is mounted on the outside, rather than the inside of the frame, which Yamaha claims also aids stability.
The rear shock is fully adjustable and mounted horizontally. The front suspension and radial calipers are based on the 2004 R1’s components.
The MT-01 will come with a selection of Yamaha-approved tuning parts designed to make the bike even more wild.
Developed in conjunction with Slovenian tuners Akrapovic, the parts are designed to liberate the power which emissions and noise regulations stifle – a full 15-20bhp with the stage three kit.
The three parts of the tuning process are:

Stage 1: Carbon trim, screen, bodywork add-ons, Akrapovic road-legal cans

Stage 2: Akrapovic full titanium race exhaust system

Stage 3: UPDATED pistons, cams, valve springs and more adds 20bhp

90 bhp is 50 percent less than the R1!!!

Trust me. With 100 ft/lbs of torque the second you release the clutch, and 111 at 3800 rpm, it doesn't matter how much HP there is. Just shift at 4k and start the party all over again.

I suppose for the same reason I visit to BMW shop every other day and drool on al the bikes. (The shop is a five minute walk from my house and next to a Starbucks)

I found myself sitting on a Roadster yesterday. Wow! What a great bike she was for me.
