Oil pressure and temperature gauge location

Not to add insult to injury.
Why not use this 'new' higher temp oil return line point as the oil pressure point also.
The additional oil temp and pressure sensor will be completely isolated from CANBUS and the original BMW fitted positions.
A new oil return pipe ( $130.00), after modifications will ( I believe) allow for a simpler installation with a reduced number of additional fitting.

I think there would be an increase in oil pressure reading also, with the 'restriction' encountered by the radiator, rather than the oil being delivered straight to the sump ( as previously by the banjo fitting site).

Just something more to churn over.

Measuring oil pressure at the cooler circuit will tell nothing aobut engine oil pressure.

I am a mechanic and I like gauges over idiot lights. This bike does not even have a low oil pressure light. I have decided to just ride the bike and not worry about it. I check the level frequently. After 20,000 miles I no longer have to add between changes. My plan is to wear this bike out. So far its 25,000 miles the first year.

You guys are somewhat out of whack (technical term) with this subject. The oil going to the cooler has not just been through the engine picking up heat. It's directly from the sump. The pressure in the cooling circuit is not relevant to engine lubrication. Picking up oil temp from the sump, or the cooler supply line would offer the same numbers.

But no one from this Forum ( or Google) has actually said 'If possible this is the best/ideal place/port to mount an oil and heat sensor.
Or is it a case that there is not a suitable mounting position for this R1200R.

I understand the exasperation, I really thought this would have well and truly explored. There would appear that a lot of gauges are being mounted for bragging value only, with little technical significance.

Actually - and I've been around the R1200R since they were just introduced at the NYC moto show..

I can't remember a one that had auxiliary gauges on it... at least not for oil pressure and temperature. Nor can I recall any aftermarket manufacturer coming up with a kit to do it, which if there was some demand I imagine one would have (they have on older BMW models.. which didn't come with the instrumentation the R12R comes with from the factory.)

David R - you may want to check your owners manual. My '07 has an oil pressure warning light - it's the red one that looks like an old oil lamp a genie might pop out of. 2nd one from the top on the left side of the cluster. Did they eliminate this with the new cluster? I'm also on a quest to wear my R1200R out - but at 76,000 miles I can't say I've met with any success.

my oilhead has 137,000 and it got to the point it kept needing repairs. Taking it on trips was a pain in the azz. I remember being in a grocery store parking lot wiping gear oil off the rear drive. It was only coming from the boot, so not a big deal. That same trip the speedo quit, so I turned around and headed to the dealer to trade it. ON THE way it blew the rear brake hose. Up till then it was my $100.00 a week parts order from MAX BMW. This is worn out to me.

Rotor buttons, clutch splines, burning oil.....



It rests in peace in my garage. I ride it now and then.

Well - there is finally a reason I might not consider buying a new R12R.. (not really, buttt.. what were they thinking?) Wonder if it displays a warning light (!) and a message on the display if the oil pressure is low?

BTW - nice photo of the R1150RT - was that in the NY Catskills? Looks like a place I know in Frost Valley..

Update - went and downloaded the Riders Manual from BMW Motorad for Feb/13.. and to my dismay there is absolutely no sign of a low-oil pressure warning. Wonder if the switch is still there and/or if it could be added...

I have read about a button to push and check the oil level electronically. It does not have that either. It does have the on board computer.

Are you being sarcastic??? There is no such protection on all autos...if you ignore the idiot light, the fuel pump will shut off when the Rod exits the side of the block!

Getting off topic. Oil pressure keeps the fuel pump running after the initial startup in case of an accident. If the engine dies, the oil pump looses pressure and stops the flow of gasoline so not to pump the tank empty with the car sitting upside down. How else would you shut down the electric fuel pump in an accident?

"Engine starts then stalls" First place to check is oil pressure or a bad switch. Look at most generic wiring diagrams.

Most american cars turn key on, fuel pump relay runs for about 5 seconds. Crank engine, relay kicks in as long as engine is cranking and for a few more seconds. Engine fires up, power from oil pressure switch keeps fuel pump relay on. It used to be direct wiring, now the computer does the job because antitheft.

Many cars have roll over valves in the gas tank and many have inertia switches...not at all oil pressure/ECU controlled. Are these in addition to an oil pressure switch?

Ford has an inertia switch. If the ball gets dislodged from a crash, this too shuts off the fuel pump. Yes a floating ball in the filler of the tank in case of rollover. A sealed vent system also helps keep the fuel in the tank in the event of a crash.

Just turn your bike key on. Listen for the pump. Fire it up. Stall the bike and listen for the fuel pump. What does shut it off?

An idiot light would be better than nothing on my bike.

On the Oilheads, the HES plate "reads" the rotation of the crankshaft, to advise the Motronic regarding FI and ignition timing. If it doesn't see crankshaft rotation, the Motronic cuts off the fuel pump. I suspect Hexheads are the same; the parts fiche shows a "crankshaft inductive sensor" in the same place as the Oilheads' HES plate.

The newer bikes (the ones without a dedicated oil idiot light) still have an oil pressure sensor. It's likely that the instrument cluster will display some sort of alert if oil pressure falls.
