Uh, ScooterCop, I was just making up that whole thing about listening to an iPod while I ride. .Never tried listening to music when I ride though. I have given a ticket or two for it.
Thanks, John. I'll check out your suggestions. In fact, I've been checking out several of the different ones listed if I didn't know them already. I'll take more suggestions, as long as they aren't Merle (or Ted) Haggard. (Sorry, Macand Gypsy--from your playlist, you'd probably like G. Love (and Special Sauce) and Tristan Prettyman

I've tried the iPod by its self with "blasters" helmet speakers....I'll try the separate earbuds next time with the speakers plugged to the Valentine

I have a little mp3 player with a bit of everything but what really makes the musical experience worthwhile is a set of moulded silicon type plugs which have a 2mm tume going into each one. The music is piped from small speakers which measure about 10mm long x 4mm x 4mm. These speakers then have wires that go into the MP3 player.
The moulded earplugs cancel out almost all external noise = very low volume on MP3 player.
The Red Hot Chilli Peppers need to be played loudly anyway so perhaps it doesn't matter.
Seriously though even with no music the wind noise is hugely reduced which is great for the long trips

Sorry to butt in again on my own thread - but
VANN -
Yes, of course!! Van Morrison. How did I leave him off my list when I have everything he's ever done? And for some reason I remember reading a thread once where you mentioned, or someone mentioned to you John Prine. It caught my eye, because I had just discovered John Prine about that time - and ended up with several of his CD's as well. At least two or three John Prine songs are on every playlist I make.
I didn't mention this guy because I figured no one but me knows of him, but I also listen to Jimmy LaFave daily and he is on every playlist too. But I don't think you guys would like him much. Probably too romantic. He also covers a lot of Dylan songs.

A great mix of mostly blues, rock, alternative and everything in between...
I also like SomaFM.com, especially the Groove Salad channel...
Over vacation, I found myself listening to Led Zeppelin on my nearly 6 year old first gen iPod as I jogged on the beach down in Gulf Shores. Coda and Physical Graffiti...
Also, R.L. Burnside... There are some great funky tracks on "A Bothered Mind". I have a serious blues addiction...

Gypsy - I am a John Prine fan (and so is Boxer, he even has a JP hat!) but alas much of my music collection is on vinyl
and several of his albums are stuck there, along with every Gordon Lightfoot album (18 or so) and more jazz than I can remember and much more. Sometime down the road, I intend to get a new turntable that hooks straight into the computer, then to the iPod and I will be singing along with John and Gordon too! And grooving to Tom Scott, Dave Sanborn, Grover Washington, JR., Earl Klugh and . . . . oh well, you get the idea.
I really need to get that turntable!

Can you do that easily?! I must have ~ 500 albums. Let's say 200 of those are still worth a listen. At 45 minutes each, that is about 150 hours of music to transfer to MP3 files. Hmm ... maybe I could pay the kids to do it.
Nah, kids don't know how to handle vinyl.

If you value your time, it's actually cheaper to just go out and buy the CD or pay to download it, if it it's available, of course. I've transferred a few vinyl albums and it is time consuming. You can't trust the software to put in the gaps between tracks and sometimes you have to baby it and ride the record/pause button. Then you also have to manually enter all the information about the album, track names, etc. I would transfer only those albums that you absolutely cannot find on digital media. YMMV, of course, and there are those of you who will enjoy that process.

I am not sure I would enjoy the process of transferring the vinyl but I am quite sure I can't afford to replace all of them!
There are turntables available with preamps that supposedly will download directly into the computer, of course with some sort of software. Tony brings up an excellent point however, that all the album and track info will have to be input manually. More research is required!
