I purchased my R from a dealership (Greensboro)used and they had just completed the 24k maintence before I bought it. I discovered it leaking oil and it was a result of reusing the crush washer. Makes me wonder if how complete was the 24k pm.

The last couple of BMW oil filters I've purchased have come with several washers included in the box. They are for the other crush washers that should be replaced when you do a full service, such as the final drive drain plug.

Agreed that it's cheap insurance - change 'em out if you have 'em.

Even after doing a complete service, including g/box, and diff, there is still some washers left over. Od sizes that as I suggested, maybe for the Kmodels??
Anyway, as everyone seems to agree, cheap insurance to replace them when doing a service.
It is amazing that we spend hundreds of dollars on screens, pipes, seats,
and then argue about replacing a few cents worth of crush washers.

What's the phrase...? Here in Yorkshire, UK, we have a phrase, which I am sure is a universal one.. "Look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves".

Just posted that quote meself on another thread. Spoooky! It must be true!

Sometimes it's more of a convenience thing than actual dollars spent,.....at least for me. When a new washer is not available and you need it NOW,.......re-using the old one even if it means a quick annealing job is a nice option to have. Otherwise use the $.50 brand new one.

...............interesting story though about how "frugal" some folks can be was relayed by a co-worker here at the coin and stamp shop where i currently work.

Seems a couple of friends were regularly bidding on stamps via an auction and both purchased some items. When the time came to send in their respective checks, the one who had bought the least (about 1/4 of the total funds spent) argued that he should only have to chip in 1/4 of the price of............

......the STAMP on the envelope!

Funniest part of this was that they argued about an hour over it. Not sure at this point on how it was settled, as i was laughing so hard i forgot to ask how it turned out.

Edited to add: I just asked the stamp guy here, seems they flipped a coin for it,........and the one who lost was mad at the other for a few months! Go figure............

Holy Shi'ite! Just checked the 2006-07 Parts list and the BMW oil filter is now $16.95 retail. WoW! That's a hefty price increase.

AC Delco PF53 is fine for those who feel safe substituting.

My last oil change was :
BMW oil filter: 16.95
BMW crush washer: .50
BMW DINO oil: 4:50/qt x 4 = 18.00
