BigC - it all good! I am just frustrated. I use Firefox, Thunderbird and AVG BTW! They helped but I still spent 2 hours tonight trying to figure out were the internet went!

Thanks for all the posts. I need to go to a Mac store and play. As much as I tinker with the bike, I don't feel the need to customize the computer much!

I agree with most of the thinking on this subject. I think you got good advice here. Try the Mac see what you think. I am not a PC hater, but I do have a preference. Also if you do buy a Mac, get the one that fills all your needs so you won't have to upgrade later, as stated, it is harder to upgrade a Mac, I personally don't see a need to do a lot of upgrades, if you get the puter you need from the start. After all, do we try to fit a Ninja engine into our Beemers? They are faster, and more powerful, lots more aftermarket stuff for them. Naw we got what we wanted all along. No need for a lot of upgrades we already got the best.

Thanks for all the replys. I am posting from a 6 1/2 year old Dell which has only had a Ram upgrade to 256. (I did add an external harddrive for picture storage.) The most basic Mac or new Dell PC would blow this thing out of the water!

I have no real Apple store nearby but will probably be going to Raleigh (where Barney goes to party!*) soon and they have one. I intend to stop in for a visit and test drive before we decide.

Since I am obviously not an upgrade kind of guy on the computer, I think one of those new 20" Mac versions would do me for a long time. And as GypsyRR pointed out, there is the cool factor! Plus, I could use the toilet paper IPOD thingy in my bathroom!

I use PCs at work, and an eMac at home. The mac is much more user friendly, and iPhoto is better than anything that I have found for the PC.

I like the single unit cpu/monitor, etc, since my cat likes to chew power cables.

ps I have been using macs since the late 80s.

I'm enjoying this thread. My Windoze just crashed...or maybe a better word would be "stuck"...like a furniture delivery truck in Okefenokee swamp! I'm pi$$ed right now. I may have lost everything if Windoze has to be reinstalled. Plus my computer repair person (my son) can't get to it until next week. *&%$#@* all to hell!

Right now I'm loving the idea of a MAC.

Unless it's a hardware failure, you should be able to reinstall xp (repair) without losing your files. It's been a while since I've done an XP reinstall (usually Ghost from an image), but there is a non-destructive reinstall option.

Ask your computer repair person.

Mac's are not perfect, they still have a glitch now and then. I have had far fewer the last couple years though, OSX has been very stable. Patching up the OS is a thing of the past too. Apple will have an update now and then, but your getting new stuff in the updates, not patches to make it work properly. I know a few windoz users who feel like they have been beta testing that OS for years. The frustration level is a lot lower.

I'm shopping for a gently used G5 Mac right now. I have two good friends who work in video/graphics production who are selling G5's. I talked with them today about sending me the specs and asking price for them. I trust these guys completely, I think. So if anyone else is interested in a G5 let me know and I'll send you a copy of the specs. I think there will be 3 or 4 for sale. 1-2 years old max.

Your question is like asking whether to use mineral or synthetic oil. There is no right answer except to change your oil regularly, but arguing about it sure keeps everybody amused!

EXTENDED WARRANTY - BUY IT!

Consider the AppleCare extended warranty to be part of the purchase price. I love my iMac, but it is barely out of the standard warranty (and covered by the extended warranty), and I just had what should have been a $700 repair, according to the techie at the store. iMacs are not user serviceable like Windoze PCs, remember that. That's another reason to buy the most fully featured one, to prolong the life of it, as you will not be upgrading that video card or motherboard. Although, if you're used to being on a 6 year old PC, any mac will last you a long time.
