I'm trying this...learned on the ST site.
From a stop, do not wind it out and then massively slip the clutch before you engage 1st. Start letting the clutch out, and when you feel the friction zone engaging and the rpm starting to drop, roll on some throttle and release the lever now .
Minimizes clutch slip, and promotes long wear. I can smoothly get into first at around 1200 rpm with the bike moving maybe 6ft....most of the time. 8)

You're NOT going to win any drag races doing this, tho. At least at first....
