237 miles (from South Las Vegas). Location: US Highway 6, 7 miles east of Benton CA.

There is no gas in Silver Peak, Coaldale or Mt. Montgomery. Don't take the Silver Peak turnoff from US 95, keep heading north and gas up in Tonopah (unless you topped off in Pahrump, or did not ride for over an hour at 90mph, which is unlikely).

And don't bother asking the guys at the extensive Nevada Highway Department facility at the top of Montgomery Pass, 11 miles from Benton. They said they don't help people who are (almost) out of gas.

Just stick out your thumb and head to the 2nd gas station in town, one block past the 1st gas station, which is at the junction with California 120 and which does not have a gas can you can use.

Then give Jack, son of the owner, $20, (might be more this year). He will give you a ride back to your bike in his pick-up with 5 gallons of fresh gas, and wait for you while you fill it up and fire it up, even it is raining and blowing like hell.

But I bet I could push it to 250 miles if I went slower.

I got 51 mpg on the last tank full :) . Not bad at all considering I was ridng pretty hard. My XR does around 70 so the big jump in capacity isn't going to affect my day to day riding costs too much. The extra 250 miles a week I do just playing will though
Just back from my local dealer for an outstanding recall finishing. O rings on the fuel system were leaking a little and I had staining on the rh oil cooler shroud and cylinder block. Should be OK now.

he is putting 89 octane in his tank and getting 50+mpg highway. Anyone else using that low?
I use 89 octane exclusively unless I'm out somewhere in Boondock, Texas where all I can get is whatever comes out of the pump. I try to use Chevron with Techron additives most of the time.

What different milage can one expect when comparing R's with the high ratio 6th gear to ones with the low ratio? Nobody has mentioned this when sharing their max mpg.

When I ride locally and do a lot of shifting, I get just over 100 miles before the light comes on

When I went for a longer ride (averaging above 50mph) I got to about 145.

I haven't been putting high octane gas in, which my friend said I should do (93 octane) because of the high engine compression.

We'll see if that does anything.

My light comes on ~135 miles when I'm cruising between 85-110 mph :D When the light comes on, I know I have at least 35 miles left if I cruise at 70 mph. I've streched my tank to 225 miles once (it took 4.7 gallons to fill her up).

185 Miles, really?? My Intruder gets me about 200 Km's, after that I'm taking a chance. 180 Miles is Awesome!

Chiming in....My light came on at 183 when on my recent 3000 mile road trip. I also paid 3.95 a gallon for 91 in Bridgeport, California in the Sierra's. YIKES! But whatcha gonna do about it?
I was cruising at 75-80mph most of the time.

180miles till the light comes on is spot on but I got tired of that and looked into the float where the light sensor is. about a 1" adjustment can be made to give more miles till the light comes on , but less on reseve. the best I ever did was 55 mpg worst 25mpg

I average between 40-45mpg. Consistently.
