Re: Planning First Long Ride
Indeed, its quite simple.
but the online guide to doing it is like 30 pages long and full of near profanity, intelligence insults, and bizarre sexual references. the way it should be.
I printed out so that I may laugh while I work on the bike.

Re: Planning First Long Ride
FYI, decided to check the valves last night, But only got one side done. they all seemed tight to me.....I expected the opposite. Anyhoo...I just want to say:
holy smokes the "R" boxer valves are the easiest damned things to get to! That was wonderfully refreshing. LOL that is all.
that was one of the things that has drawn me to the boxer engines. I have no real facts to back me up on it, but they've always just seemed easier to mess with....

Re: Planning First Long Ride
woohoo! maintenance done. gettin the old girl ready...valves, oil, FD, trans. did a TB sync, but think I might even do better with a real sync tool and some more time and experience. :/ Bike feels GREAT. FINALLY got to ride it today. put tires on last night too.
word of caution to oil changers:
PULL OFF THAT OIL FILTER WARM.
And when you do put it back on, DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN IT.
The time I saved by the valves being easier than expected, I spent on the oil filter last night. I had drained the oil, but then let it get cold. And I MANGLED that SOB. well over an hour just removing. it would not budge. Being up in that cavity, is a pain in the a$$ lol ...stripped itself and the wrench I had. tried every trick I had used before. Finally ended up drilling holes in the wrench, and putting small screws through it AND the oil filter. I swear I was on the verge of a stroke lol I've never had something so simple be so complicated in my life.
FOund this googling later. COuld have saved myself a half hour at least LOL thought I had an original idea, NOPE

My wife bought me these boots at the beemer shop. which solves the problem I have of protection when I absolutely HATE boots. They are quite comfortable!

-just need a good pair of warm air pants.... and tank bag with a clear top vinyl pocket big enough to hold and use an iphone 6plus on top for nav and tunes. Any suggestions?

Re: Planning First Long Ride
WELL...
scratch most of this. big west trip is PROBABLY canceled. AND "why" you might ask?
MY best friend, his 2013 Harley, it ate the rear wheel bearing. And i think took the wheel and swingarm with it.(luckily not him as happened in a turn-broke is better than dead) Hes unsure of the cost at this point...BUT, then, for giggles, uncle sam kicked him while he was down with his tax bill.
been here, dont that.
So most likely not happening.
But, AT LEAST Ill go on a much smaller loop maybe over to Colorado then down to OK/AR.

Re: Planning First Long Ride
Sorry to hear that your ride is falling through. That sucks. On the other hand, you could head to Staunton, VA to the Beakster Bash in the middle of May.

If you make it to Colorado, get in touch. I would be happy to act as tour guide for a day or two.

Right on guys.
I'm still gonna enjoy it.

Re: Planning First Long Ride
i am considering it. Just feel like its a long way to go for my first real long ride, and by myself to boot. Though I do feel like I could probably cover more ground by myself

Re: Planning First Long Ride
also, I want to add. redid the valves-right side sounded ticky. then redid the throttle body sync. Drained the tank after finding the crud backed up into the canister, replaced with 93, and it runs wonderfully.
Iv'e never seen regular maintenance make a difference like that!
While, its not super smooth like i'd hoped at 4k rpm, gone is probably half of the surging, and in its place is fantastic and even throttle response. Now i'm hoping for some better mpg's

Re: Planning First Long Ride
Boxer engines aren't that smooth to begin with. Good you have the maintenance done right, that's most likely why you notice a difference.

Re: Planning First Long Ride
On our 2002 R1150R we changed to Autolites plugs, I forget the number but it was recommended here on the forum to stop the surging problem. It does stop the surging for about 7-8000 miles so know every time we change tires we change the plugs with a new set of Autolites

My plugs didn't look beat yet, I just cleaned them up and threw them back in.swamper wrote:On our 2002 R1150R we changed to Autolites plugs, I forget the number but it was recommended here on the forum to stop the surging problem. Really, though. NO i did not EXPECT it would be totally smooth, I know the boxer engines characteristics. It was just a hope on the side LOL

Re: Planning First Long Ride
Try a set of the Autolite plugs. They don't look bad at all at 7-8000 miles but they make a big difference when re-newed.

Re: Planning First Long Ride
The AF-XIED 02 sensor manipulator (separate threads discuss this extensively) would reportedly cure any surging. My 02 R never surged, but it runs a lot sweeter with this device installed.
