Just Order a set of HP2 Heads, Pistons, and Cams. You should see about 20-30 HP increase.

Yeah, you're on the wrong bike if you're concerned with engine "upgrades"....
IMHO the best performance upgrade would be to get Ohlins shocks, something you can really feel... or take a track training day to improve the nut behind the controls.

Stop beating on the poor guy ;) If he wants more power let him try, and if he manages to actually achieve it then good for him.

While we all know prevailing wisdom says there's very little improvements to be had wouldn't it be cool if he managed to do it anyway?

I know I wouldn't say no to a R1200R with 140hp =P~ and upgraded suspension.

Remember, this is how progress is made, some guy in a garage trying to do what everyone else says is impossible.

Well, the fellow asked for our opinion and I respectfully gave mine based on years of riding and listening to many people's attempts to squeeze more power out of this engine.
I don't see how anybody's replies could be considered beating on the guy.
Some good suspension, maybe a couple track days and the bike will go faster, if that's the goal.
There's no off the shelf product that will significantly increase the HP as far as I know.
By all means break out of the box, I think many of us would love to be shown we're wrong. :D

my thoughts on the subject:
1. changing air filter is at this point pretty much proven to do nothing, but you can still do it
2. going with complete exhaust system, header and all
3. Getting a power commander to tune the whole system on the dyno

This may net you a few ponies, but amount of money it will cost i agree with others maybe better spend on suspension and some track days.
On the other hand is money is really no object at all, i would do all of the above including suspension.
Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects handlebars to the saddle.

I meant no disrespect to Dorian when I wrote "Buy an S1000RR, K1200RR or an HP2 Megamoto. It is foolish and pointless to try to hop up an R1200R."

I have ridden with folks riding those bikes, and they have bags of fun with all that horsepower! Plus the S1000RR is one of the best bargains there is in superbikes (the HP2 is way expensive per horsepower/Cheveaux Vapeur). I simply maintain that you cannot get more than a few more HP (or CV) out of a Roadster, thus it is both foolish and pointless to try. ChiTown knows this, and he is the sportiest Roadster rider I know of (look for pics of him scraping heads on the Dragon). As he says, put some money in shocks and a sport-rider school. Or just change bikes.

Thanks to another post by you Chitown, I realized that the guy probably has missed the most obvious performance enhancement i.e get the black with white stripe model :) THat alone should give a significant increase in performance as we all know. Funny no one mentioned that before.

hi all
read all the threads , yes it would be nice to have a faster r1200 , head work would make a lot of differance and cams , the suspension would need a upgrade too, clutch would go pop with the extra power , need ceramic . brakes next .some one mentioned that this bike in standard form cannot be ridden flat out everywhere and he is right , not on the roads anyway . track maybe . how many riders would red line this engine every gear change ,
with the expense necessary to do this to the bike the easiest solution is to get a second hand hp2 sport motor or sell the bike and get a faster one .
nitrous is cheapish option as well ,
1. fed into air box 10hp nozzle.
2 other option , supercharger or turbo . big expense .
some days its not worth chewing through the straps and chains in the morning

YOU KNOW.........Some of us out here just like modifying their machine. I love my modified bikes. Some of you like buying every little gizmo out there, some like wind screens made for a car, some like long trips, some like modifing machines. In terms of answering Darions question, to keep saying it's pointless or a waste of time, or go buy something else is pretty pointless in and of itself.

Gezzz....I thought for a minute I was on a Harley board !

HEY Dorian !!!

I'd agree with GBag: one direction might be to check out HP2 Heads, Pistons, and Cams. Find out how to remap for an HP2. Free up the intake and exhaust. Look into a power commander or some other code modifier. Do some dyno work.

Check this guys work out: http://www.rbracing-rsr.com/bmwturbos.htm#r1100
They were doing some interesting stuff back in the 90's and are probabaly still around.
Talk to these guys: http://bavarianmotorcycleworkshop.com/

Say and, don't let others here discourage you. Keep us posted on your research and work.

I have a R1200R, and I would to know the radical solutions to increase the power engine on my bike ?
Many of people tell that change the exhaust, do not really increase the power.
How can we do ? I would like to increase arround 15 or 20 CV.
People who are modified their motorcycle, can you tell us your solutions ?
Ok, let's say goal is +20 HP (approx 20 CV), or +18% over stock.

R1200 piston speed at 73mm stroke is around 4000 fpm, which suggests that crank might stand a bit more RPM, but cylinder filling could be an issue for >101mm bore. Increasing redline, bore, stroke would likely diminish engine longevity (a lot!)

CR is already 12.0, so bumping up to 13 for air/oil-cooled motor will be challenging; you could shave the cylinders or run custom pistons, plus use race gas?

Without knowing the open-loop full-throttle fuel map settings, it's not possible to guess power increase through fuel/air tweaks, but most certainly not the 18% you're seeking.

You're stuck with the transmission losses due to shaft drive, which exceed those for chain drive.

So, you're not going to achieve the +20 CV through "all motor" means. If you want sustained power increase, then your "radical" options are reduced to forced induction: supercharging or turbo(super)charging:

Wow. The heat off of that thing would be intense. I don't think our motor format is really setup for the use of a turbo or mechanical supercharger. I'll bet lag is relatively minimal though.

Dorian, I'm not sure what color your bike is, but I was told that the black ones were the fastest.

The latest edition of Sandy Cohen's BMW Motorcycle Magazine has an article on a kit that boosts the output of an R1200R engine. The big-bore kit (to 1216cc) has been developed by Rosner & Rose in Germany. HP increased to 130; torque to 103. But "... for a price, Ugarte, for a price." Around $6500!

The article mentions that some performance gains are to be had just from headwork.

I came from 178mph Blackbird to my 01 RTP1100.
I knew it would be slower but more comfortable.
This bike will handle the twisties as good as my Blackbird.
I don't have to buy a new rear tire every 3k miles.
I don't hurt all over when I get off, but that's the problem. I don't want to get off it.
The boxer motor can be fast but you need to buy the right model.
Set the valves, sync TB and ride on.

Concerning the Rosner & Rose big bore kit, In BMW Motorcycle Magazine I'm finding the following:

Hardware, software, tuning, oil, filter, and installation = $ 3,695. Thats a great deal considering it includes installation.
to get the full 130 hp and 103 ft-lbs...head work = $ 1,200
so thats a total of $ 4,895

You could get up over $6,500 by getting the Akrapovic exhaust ystem which, IMO is not necessary.

Wish the Rosner & Rose web site were in English......!!! I'd like to see what the head work olone would yield.

I don't think I read anywhere he wanted an opinion indeed he later asked for no opinions, a solution as he asked for is not an opinion.

This post is four months old, it would be interesting to know what 'radical solutions' dorian353 has done to his R1200R and how they increased the performance.

I cannot believe how many people are just stubbern and have a NO infront of every sentence that they spell on this thread... the guy asked for direction how to increase power ...and he got some nice answers like : buy another bike ! get and k1300 ....
On this forum there are no modified r1200r or 1200gs ... but if you take a look at the mother of this bike ...Germany and understand some german or want to use google translate ..there are some forums and guys ho modifie these bikes to some numbers that are really amazing and it is possibile..
Roesner kit is one of them and it makes good power but most important it makes tourque that would rip to first 3 gears... there are these guys that also prep the bike and make power out of the boxer engine: www.rehcing.com ...and others...
Just because ... this forum has guys that don't do tunning to this bike that does not mean that it does not have potential ... there are bikes with only software and filters that produce :107 hp to the whell and 116 NM ... that is good power...
Anyway ...don't let these guys dissapoint you and if you wanna tune the engine and get more power just research a bit and doit...if you need more infor for the german forums ... then i'll post it and you can start asking questions over there ...
