Suburban Machinery Peg Lowering

Interim update. On the left side, (lower picture) I extended the lower piece of styrofoam 3/4" to mimick the offset of the lowered pegs. Today I noticed that that little piece is gone. No signs of bottoming on the rest of the mockup. I suspect that I may have inadvertantly kicked it off. The break was clean and there is no sign of road rash on the rest.

Sunday is the annual Yankee Beemers Vanilla Bean ride out to Pomfret, CT. I will use that ride to test an additional 150 miles or so.

I'm also looking forward to hearing from jess about how his lowering kit fits on his lowered suspension bike.

After reading Don's comments, I suspect that I'm over analyzing this project. But I don't want to waste any more roadsters.

I probably should explain what I meant by " issues ". I have some pretty bad arthritis in my left hip from an auto accident 25 years ago. When it is painful, it hurts like hell. I try to keep as much legroom on a bike as possible to help alliviate this. Always looking for a seat that gives me more legroom between seat and footpeg. The other option is a lowered footpeg. There are 2 drawbacks to both these options. One is that I have a 29" inseam, which means I tippy toe all my bikes and the second is trying to tippy toe the bike around. With the Suburban Machinery kit, that extra inch or so that the peg sticks out makes it that much harder to move it around. It also puts my left leg out a little when I ride, and you can't move it back in...basically it spreads me out a little. So, for me, I feel better and more comfotable with a seat a little taller than a peg a little lower and further out. The possibility of dragging it on corners never has been the issue, though I wonder how much that liklihood increases with a bike with the lowered suspension. On my GS, it is possible to remove the stock footpeg and install a peg off an 1100 RT in it's place, which lowered the peg about an inch without it sticking out any further, plus I removed the return spring and I can actually raise the pegs while tippy toeing the bike around...and no, I have never dropped any of my bikes........yet ( knock on wood ).

If I can do this to the stock foot controls, then any lowering of the pegs will compromise the bikes ability to turn.

Well .. d'uh! Lowered pegs aren't for all of us, but some of us need 'em and some of us just like 'em.
Me , I don't scrape in my nightmares, let alone my dreams ...
However, when all we're done posin' , the OP asked: would he notice the offset?. Answer: no.
so the gratuitous pegscrape shot is .. umm .. gratuitous.

Ain't it great to have a bike that can be a lowered-pegs light tourer and a sportsbike?

What you have here is a bike that is very capable of high speed, cornering and the like.
But for some reason it attracts this guy, and the need to lower his pegs!
Well it just goes to show how flexible this bike is!

But for some reason it attracts this guy, and the need to lower his pegs!
Well it just goes to show how flexible this bike is!

The OP asked : would he notice a 25mm offset to the LHS lowered footpeg?
The friendly answer from many riders on this board was: most likely not, so don't sweat it.

The anthropologist asked: why is it that a go-fast guy felt the need to jump in and tell everyone how much he can scrape his standard pegs?

The anthrolopologist asked again: so why , after so many riders pointed out (with some amusement) that they have no need to scape pegs, did another guy (a free-rider, no less) jump in with an attempt at derision?

I'll be watching for your report. I can say that an additional 140 mies on Sunday caused no ill effects to my styrofoam mockups. I expect your results will be excellent.

Aside from my humorous asides, I have had a few quite aggressive riders ride my R12R over the 3 years of its life. One guy thinks he touched (I couldn't see any marks) but all said they weren't conscious of any limitation. Note that the LHS lowered SM peg does not have a feeler under it (I actually can't answer from the standard peg - I've never used it!)

BTW, I have Wilbers front & rear, set up my the dealer (yep, great service!) and left that way - I don't know if their settings and maximum compression points are any different than the stock shocks. However, the Aussie backroads I punt over, and my faster mates have taken my R12R, are as bumpy as an orphanage bed, so any issues should have shown up (these bumps do bottom the shocks on corners all to regularly). None have - I don't ordinarily take mine to its limit, but I have on occasion (not regularly - I'm no Joe Finn!) gone to the edge of the tread, fully laden, over bumps, without incident (and yes, I changed my underwear afterwards )

Not the update you're waiting for, no. This project has kept me pretty busy as I prepare for a Scooter Land Speed event this weekend.

By the way the scooter land speed project was awesome to review. That engine rebuild can't be broken in yet - hampering your top speed.

My Suburban Machinery peg lowering kit came within hours of being ordered. The components appear to be of highest quality. Packaging, directions etc. were all top shelf.

Although the pegs are only lowered 1-1/2 inches or so, the results are dramatic. I've only had a short test ride but I can say it is much easier to mount and dismount; it's much easier to lift my feet after launch and lower my feet when stopping; and the riding position is much more comfortable. Here are a few before and after pix to give you an idea how it all unfolds:





The hardest part of the whole project was castrating the little ball that was added to the side stand for 2010 models to make it easier to deploy the stand. I waited until I had the rest of the installation done before deciding that it really had to go. A hacksaw and a #10 Bastard file made a good job of it:



Now on to restoring my salvaged farkles.

The lowered pegs look like they make a huge difference in knee angle. Bet you're gonna like that. Looking forward to seeing them on Sunday. Meanwhile, you can look at wifeys bike. Mine is down pending receipt of my new BIll Mayer saddle.
