What a story! I just added a new post yesterday (What to do) about my thoughts about looking for a newer bike with less miles. Well, you pretty much ended any ideas I had about buying a r1150r. I very sorry that you had to go through all of this and am totally disgusted in the manner that BMW has treated you. BMW...are you watching this!!!

Sorry to hear about your misfortune on this. I was discussing this issue with some guys at the Fingerlakes BMW Rally and many were completely unaware of the condition.

Having it back and ready to ride will be at least some consolation.

MLW & I are headed for Wisconsin this Saturday via the Michigan's UP; we'll see how much of an adventure it turns out to be.

Regards,

Sound like a deal to me if he stands by his word. ;)
Free still? Even the labor off would be nice....

Sorry to hear that man, even tho I am half a world away, I can understand your frustrations, having been through similar incidents with lying mechanics myself ..... more than once.

How I cope is that I tell myself to move on, learn the lesson and put it behind ya. Thinking about it all the time for me festers negative thoughts and bring anger and disappointment into what is suppose to be a joyful pastime. Hang in there, man.

Cheers

Johnny,

Wow. What a saga. Sorry to hear about your problems both with the bike and the dealers! Makes me nervous about my bike choice now...but what can you do? Stick with the R or say goodbye to BMW forever?

I'll stick with mine for now...

johnnyjs1 wrote:They called me Wed. and said the bike was ready, unfortunately I could not make it there that day. So I told them i'd be there at 4:30 today to get the bike. Well.....come 3:30, the service manager calls me and says they were doing a final inspection on the work performed. "We noticed that the o-ring for the injector was broken, it'll be overnighted to us and you can come get it at noon tomorrow." So after 5 min of profuse apologizing from him, I just asked him when the nightmare will be over.
Sounds to me that the bike wasn't 'really' ready. They probably got it back together by the deadline but didn't 'road test' it at all. Since you couldn't get there Wednesday, they gave it the final test (hence, not being DONE by Wednesday) and found another issue (or they lied all together and it wasn't fully complete but since you couldn't get there, they made an excuse why it would take longer, but not related to the original promise).

Sounds like the dealer can't be trusted. :doubt:

Bike is home now. The original quote was 1200, then they saw the input shaft was gone so it got bumped to 2200. I went and picked up the bike and the grand total ended up being $1750. I think they felt bad and split the difference of the two quotes. I took some pics of the parts that are now in my possession. They didnt turn out too well, but you can definately see the wear.

I still may go to Indy next weekend for the MotoGP race.

The pictures are good enough to show the wear. Something is not right with those parts, or their assembly. But at least now you can ride agaiin.

You have probably all seen the post on the BMW Sport Touring forum where BMW admitted to having some quality control problems:

I took the bike out for a 900 mile jaunt this weekend. Everything seems to be running very well. I did however notice one difference from before. The bike seems to be geared higher now. I know the rocksters have a lower gearing than the R1150R's. But it seems to me that my Rock now has the same gearing. Is this possible? When they change the clutch hub, input shaft, does this affect the gearing? Or am I imagining things, and dont know what I'm talking about (see sig below). But I swear.....the RPMs are down when on the slab. Everything else seems good.

I'm a little confused about something from a lot earlier in your story.

If I'm reading things correctly, the BMW regional rep came out and denied coverage for the damage -- but the bike wasn't actually taken apart so there was nothing for him to inspect. Am I correct in this?

If that's the case, then I would immediately escalate my complaint to his superiors along with a complaint about his performance (and the dealer's behavior, too).

Or am I reading it wrong?

Nope, you are absolutely correct. The Rep. didnt inspect the bike at all. He said "The bike is almost 2 yrs out of warranty, tough luck." Funny thing is, when I went to pick up my bike, the service manager pointed to another bike on the lift with the SAME exact problem.... clutch spline failure. So thats at least 4 bikes that I have physically seen at that shop including mine in the past month. BMW-"No, there is no problem with the clutch splines." :-k

Oh...one more thing, I seem to be getting better gas mileage now. Previously my light would come on at around 120-140 miles, this weekend however, the earliest it came on was at 160 miles :-k and at one point i went 190 miles before filling it up and still had almost 1/2 a gallon left in the tank. :D

Johnny - Give us 6th gear RPMs versus MPH at a couple of speeds. Maybe the dealer swapped in a different transmission with the "overdrive-ish" top gear, as supplied with the Roadsters.

I'll take a look today on my way home from work while on the slab.
