Sorry you had a bad experience at D2D, but I can assure you the guys who put on the event are anything but posers. Mostly life long Alaskans that have many miles on dirt and riding all around the world. They are a great bunch and bust there butts to host a free event that many have attended and had a great time. You were on the wrong side of a years long tradition that was enforced in a stupid way by one guy. Don't let him inform your opinion of others you did not meet.

Lived in Fairbanks for 16 years; been up the Dalton winter and summer my share of times. Never on the R since I have a GSPD for that. So no Dalton for us this trip.

Fair enough, try to see it from my side though since all i have to go on was that experience.
I'll still repeat my story when D2D comes up because I lived it and it pissed me off at the time. They should put a leash on their dog, if you had someone walk up to you and talk to you like that you might feel the same way.

Right on, photos from the heart, from the road are good by me. I don't know of any real big photographers on this forum so far anyways, just a bunch of passionate R1200R riders.

Lost Rider... thanks! And yes, it's the BMW comfort seat. Came standard on the '11's as far as I know, as mine wasn't listed as an option.

At 1st I thought I would switch to the 'original standard' which I did like on my test-rides but I got used to this one very quickly. Just over 9k and no complaints whatsoever.

Love your photos as well... and not for nothing, they helped me stick with the roadster after seeing what you've put yours through. I ride street only, dirt roads on occasion (such as the other day) and have not regretted passing up the GS one bit. I am very happy with my roadster!

Here's a picture with a bag off. The mounts are not good looking, but they come off easily with 4 Zeus fittings. Two of the Zeus fittings are visible in front of the mount.

On that b&w shot - Was it really taken while moving or did you use some photoshop magic (or a little of both)?

I don't use photoshop magic or photoshop at all really, I play with "painting" color in or out using Apple Aperture but that's it, I was riding when I took it.

While on long empty stretches of highways I've always played the no hands game using my body to balance and steer the bike with the throttle locked. I think my self-record is like 40 miles or something without touching the bars.
Motorcycling is all about balance to me, I have a few games like that.... seeing how long I can creep up at a stop light using clutch/rear brake without touching the ground with my feet is another. Kind of like Trials Bike riding on the street.

A.D.D. can be good sometimes.

I'm puzzled as to why so many continue to mount electronics low and directly in front of their bikes instrumentation and where you have to remove all your hands weight from the handlebars if you have to give the module a poke while under-way.

No mission-critical problems with the OEM mount and navigation. Using a navigation touchscreen — with a glove — was a bigger deal breaker. I exchanged the Nuvi 660 for the Navi IV and its mount buttons. (You can't buy a Navi IV mount a la carte, and even if you could, the mount buttons won't work with the 660.) Center mounting the GPS looks cleaner, too:

My custom GPS mount on top of my tank box works great, it looks like it blocks the instruments in my photos taken with the camera at chest level, but in reality it does not. It's in a perfect position for me being closer and centered with the whole mount completely, easily removable.
If I had my GPS cleanly mounted to the side like yours, it would throw the bike out of balance for my hands free approach to riding on highways, like it does on my Husaberg.

What a glorious weekend, it was new rubber time!
For the first time in all the tires I've replaced on this bike, these PR2's I replaced were worn evenly from all the canyon riding, not squared off.
I love not living in the midwest anymore.









Besides being worn down, I am very happy to get the Pilot Road 2's off my bike anyways.... a buddy of mine installed them before riding my bike to La Paz , to my dismay.
A quick trip to my favorite local dealer with internet-like low tire prices and free installation. (wheels off the bike)

With freshly rebuilt Ohlins', a new steering damper and fresh high performance tires my bike is handling better than I can remember in the past!
It's on rails now in the canyons.
I love this bike.
