Ram Mount

Post by jlr12r »

Anyone have any expierence wtih these mounts? I am a little concerned about the handle bar clamps marking the finish. I like the flexibility of these mounts, thinking about using one to mount a box for some toogle switches. Would you suggest any other mounting system?

Thanks
Jim

The clamps ship with rubber strips to prevent metal to metal contact.
Got 2 ball mounts on my handlebars.

I do too, but without the rubber strips. They are pretty firmly attached and while they are on, there is no obvious marring/damage to the bars. I have a feeling that when I take them off, there won't be too much of a noticeable mark.

My Zumo 550 mount did not come with the rubber. I have a roll of black rubber matting that I bought in Home Depot or Lowes and use around the house. I cut a strip of that and wrapped it in place and closed the overlapping ends with electrical tape.

Had it in one place for a week and then moved it. You can't even tell where it was originally so I can vouch for it.

I've used RAM mounts for many years and I like them, but I don't like the handlebar clamp types because they CAN scratch the paint on the bars. I'd suggest you use a #252 or #272 ball mounted on an existing bolt. For example, you could use one of the handlebar clamp bolts (with a suitable spacer) and the #272.

I'm also planning to mount some electrical stuff on my bars, but I'm not going to use a RAM mount. Instead, I'm going to make a couple of small metal panels and attach them to those same handlebar clamp bolts. The switches, etc. will mount in holes in the panels.

TonyT has a mount system on his ST that is awesome.

I think he had it made by the gadget guy.
The gadget guy does it all when it comes to custom mounts.

I used a RAM mount without rubber strips for my GPS on my HD Sportster. When I transfered the mount over to my R12R there were no marks on the Harley's bars. Using the rubber seems like a good idea, though.

I have one of these I use for my StreetPilot, when I'm not using the tank-bag mount. Works great, comes with sticky felt, and doesn't scratch anything. Quality stuff.
