No need to plot a fully funded scientific review, MIXR. I tested the armor four times using the subsequent method you suggested and the reading is still over 110F. HOW it happens is not that much of a concern for me. I'll leave that to you scientific minds. But in the meantime, I'll ride sans armor until I can buy some replacement pieces.

Just reading an interesting article in todays newspaper about motorcycle clothing temperatures.
They show a thermal image of a motorcyclist with normal leathers and they had a temp of 45 deg C ( 113 F)..and at the same time another rider wearing BMW's TFL Cool System leather with a temp of 26 deg C ( 78 F)
That's a big difference..and just goes to show how hot normal leathers and riding gear can be..they claim this new leather can reduce the surface temp by 20-25 C ( 68-77 F)..and in extreme cases like riding through deserts can reduce temps by 40 C ( 104 F)...so..if you can have a reduction of 104 F...geees just just how hot it must get without the reduction.
Maybe none of this has anything to do with Gypsy's hot knees..but it's still interesting..IMO

Taking the surface temp of a black object in the sun is going to give you a reading much higher than ambient shade temp--which is the temperatue the weather people give you, so 109 in the bright Texas sun is understandable. Put another black obejct out there--like your tires and check its temp.
If there is a marked difference then maybe the armor is somehow reacting with sunlight.
Sweating - sorry, "ladies" perspire, under some matierials can cause local irritation--maybe that's what you're seeing. An allergic reaction would likely itch, persist after removal of exposure and possible blister maybe. If the reaction went away after a little while, probably local irritaion. Also, a common cause for redness at pressure points is laundry products. Did you change detergents or just wash the pants for the first time? Or any of the other garments?
Finally, Under the "CE" in your picture, is a code for the material used in the armor. I would google that and look for its MSDS info--"material safety data sheet." See if it can cause dermatitis _ "contact" or other.
Also, google that code along with "allergic" or "contact dermatitis" or "redness" or "atopic" and see what comes up.
BTW are those pants cool enough for Texas summers?

A friend has had the same problem with armor as you have expressed. It is not so much the chemical / material composition of the plates, but rather a severe reaction to the combination of heat and friction (friction of course increase the temperature). He has taken nylons and made tubes that he slides over his knees to alleviate the friction. It’s the same thing many of us do, using nylons as sock liners, to prevent heat rash and blister while wearing our fire boots and stomping around the Southwest and Great Basin in the summer’s heat. I would assume fnfalman is using Underarmor to combat the same issues. If nothing else, it is a cheap attempt to isolate the problem.
