Same here.... I've had no interaction with other motorists as far as dialog goes. I get lots of stares from the neighborhood kiddies but that's about it. I have to admit it has a better bite without the can on...
I was thinking the "it's not a Harley" comment applied but then if they're so ignorant as to try and compare it to that then rational thought is lost upon them anyway. Shrug and show them your tail light
I concur with Bob on this one. You don't know with certain people out there.
I've had things yelled at me from guys in pickups while on my bike and while dressed in plainclothes. The former generally have involved positive comments about my rides. The latter usually involved some level of racial insult. In the former case, I'll say thanks or ignore them if it's a smart aleck remark about my bike. In the latter case, I simply keep silent. It's funny how no one ever says anything negative to me when they're alone. They seem to know there is a probability that they'll get their butts kicked.
Anyhoo, I too carry on occasion. I'd hate to think of all the hassle of having to explain myself in court why I shot somebody. So I actually go to greater lengths to avoid confrontation if I am armed.

I hear ya. I can't stand when I have to do that. Especially if I have to take off work too. "But your honor, I had to shoot him 14 times, he was still moving"

I agree. However, my gender and size work in my favor if I ever end up having to explain why I shot a man ..........I think. But, still, I avoid confrontation.
I've been thinking about this for a while, and initially decided it's better to let some things go, as in "pick your battles". But most of the comments I get aren't made maliciously. As rdsmith said, "it's usually about them" and how they want to appear to you so that you (as a "cool" motorcycle rider") will know that they are also a "member" of the motorcycling club, or at least a fan. I think it's often about achieving camraderie with you either by complimenting your ride or making idle banter, and if you assume that most comments you hear are harmless then I suspect you are probably going to have a happy ending to your encounter (unless of course you are mistaken, then I'd "show them your tailights!"). I have been mistaken (both ways) about this...
Anyway, my response to your encounter might have been,"It takes better engineering to make a bike quiet than it does to leave it loud" and putter off still able to hear their silence...
So I actually go to greater lengths to avoid confrontation if I am armed.
