I HIJACKED Sweatmark's R1150R this year (not to worry - he has the bike of his dreams now)...I had to tighten it up a bit...check out the latest tank bag system. I copied someone on the Roadster Board with the SW-Motech tank bag system. One problem, however, was that the GPS mounting bracket was on LONG backorder when I ordered the bag :? . I went ahead and made my own GPS/XM Radio mounting system using the SW-Motech "Engage" tank bag with RAM mounts we already had. GOT TO SAY -- IT IS TIGHT!!! 8) I used Big Mak system until this year...just needed a bag that was SOLID and looked like it was born on the bike. I WILL NEVER STRAY to another bag (of course, Sweatmark is waiting for the same system to go electrified, then he will make the change....):











....AND, the BEST part is....Plenty of time left over to make Strawberry Jam!!!!

...It really is a great system. Pull the pin and the bag releases instantly and smooth. It has some rubber on the back, so when you go to fuel up the bag stays where you put it on the seat.

Mark had some wiring harnesses made for both our bikes, so all we have to do when we stop somewhere is pull apart one connection (tank bag to power) and pull the communications connect apart (tank bag to helmet) and I can carry the whole thing using the tank bag carry strap.

I also tried it with the raincover (it's wet most of the time in Oregon) and it covers all gadgets nicely...I think I have a picture:



The tank bag shape looks as though someone designed it to fit the Roadster...cool!

OK, enough already... need to change my Roadster board password. First, the Mrs. stole my faithful R1150R black beauty bike, and now she's stealing my board identity! Actually, small prices to pay for the woman who stole my heart.

Tank bag info: the SW Motech setup does look good, even compared with our well-proven BigMak flip-up bags. The BigMak is great for frequent fill-up road trips and Iron Butting, but the bag choices are somewhat limited and not exactly elegant.

Twisted Throttle catalog hints at something even cooler to come: SW Motech Quick-Lock tankbag base that incorporates 12Vdc power connection (enabled via relay) for very clean installation of electronic gizmos.

We keep all of our Motocomm stuff (intercom unit, Garmin Rino, XM Roady2) in our tankbags, and might both gravitate towards this system when available.

The Mrs. bought the regular (non-powered) Quick-Lock version; it's the powered version that's not yet ready for primetime. If the regular mount survives this summer's riding, then I'll likely try the SW Motech system myself via the powered mount.

Great idea RAM mount in the bottom of the Engage bag. I have an extra RAM in the goodies box and it is out to the shop to play! thanks - Lee

This is the bag for me. I've spent way too much time reviewing various options and almost pulled the plug on other bags. Once I get the dinero for this I'm pulling the trigger.

Just spent several hundred on system cases and can't justify it right now, but it will definitely be the way I go when the time comes.

BTW, congrats on the jam. I have many talents...making jam is NOT one of them

Truth be told I haven't brewed for a while (homebrew) but now that the kids are a little older, I'm looking at coming back to it.

Also, the Big Mak mount is DIFFERENT than the one for the Motech solution. similar idea but different bracket.

I like this bag a lot, but it seems small. Did you consider the Engage XL, which is twice the capacity ? If not, why ? Looks, size, don't need that much space ? A 15 liter bag is pretty much a standard size for day trips I think. I thought it would make a decent commuter's bag for me. Lunch, plus all the other things I like to carry. Qucik release, carry strap. Seems perfect. You guys seem to be using the Engage for serious touring.

I like the small Engage bag. I only use it for things I need quick access to or valuables I want to take with me on a stop. The bigger stuff gets saddlebagged or tail-packed. - Lee

Since you have a plethora of jam, I think there should be a forum jam with labels and all. Then when I spill my jam on my nice new white shirt, cause I don't have a bib on, I won't feel bad.
