good vibrations?

Post by PV »

Hi to all of you

One week ago i adjusted valves. Arrow on camshaftsprocket horizontally adjusted to a firm drag outlet 0,30 mm and inlet 0,15 mm.

After adjusting went for a ride. Beneath 4000 rpm smooth, above more and more vibes. in steer, buddy, footpegs. Pulled clutch lever at 100 km / hour result; no vibes so it must be the engine.

This weekend also new tires bt 014 front, BT 020 rear.
And cardan needle bearings renewed.

I checked engine for leaks in air tubes, spark plugs. Spark plugs left cylinder grey tan on outher ring, right cylinder black tan on outher ring, central electrode both grey tan. See image.

Is there anyone of you who has an idea what could cause this and if spark plugs are ok or showing something is wrong? I myself am thinking about synchronisation or mixture left right wrong (or is this the same)

Note: Before adjustment no vibes like this in bike wile outlet valves were on 0,4 mm.

Thanks for replying

Were your valves out by much?

Then, did you re-balance your throttle bodies after the valve job?

Different color deposits on plug body could indicate one cylinder leaner/one richer. After idle throttle bypass screw adjust and balance, make sure of balance at ~4000 rpm. Cable stretch can be the cause for the higher RPM vibes and plug color differences. Adjust cable for sync at higher RPMs

This morning rebalanced and cable adjusted.

Rides much better but stil some vibration at higher rpm + 4000.
Somewhere els on this forum I read of attaching a "balance tube" between both trottle bodies. I wonder what's the function of this tube.

G'day Peter....it's 6.30 am on Sunday here right now...but I'm up and checking out the news.

About that balance tube....I was about to respond to your question...but.

I don't really know.

It was talked about here a while back...and when I had my last service done I asked the mechanic at my BMW dealer (Brad Black) and he said some of the other BMW bikes (eg the K bikes) have this tube that runs between the throttle bodies to help keep them in balance...so he said it was worth a try and see how it goes.

Well it really didn't seem any different...but it always ran good anyway...so I left it there...I might change it back and see it I can notice any difference.

I'm hoping someone else that knows what's going on there might explain it better for us.

cheers

good vibrations,

Post by PV »

 Hi there,

Perfectly synchronised by my dealer, still some vibration,
He told me the difference in spark plug color is caused by right cilinder still uses some oil and left doesn't.

BTW:
Is it true that when it comes to that pinging at hot days and acceleration from lower rpm it is always the left cylinder?
Why not the right one?

Strange beasts those German Q's

I adjusted my valves yesterday with the help of some experienced tuners. I had a lot of vibes form about 3500 to 5000 rpm range and no real valve noise. Found they were much too tight. I had much to learn about feeler gauge 'feel'. Anyhow, after adjusting/loosening the valves the R is just as smooth as can be through the aforementioned rpm range. So smooth that I was in fourth gear when I normally would have been in fifth. TB's were checked and found to be synced up fine. When you say you adjusted to a 'firm drag' it makes me think they might be too tight.
Mine were adjusted to a 'loose' drag. I can hear the valves purr now.

disclaimer: This is only my second attempt at adjusting valves.
I am a novice with feeler gauges.

Interested in your findings

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your clear comment, that is what I was thinking about too.
I shall check / adjust valves coming weekend and make the drag more (s)light.

Btw do you have any idea why, in most (or all) cases, when it comes to pinging the left cylinder shows this phenomenon and not the right one?
Dealer says due to oil consumption of right cylinder (see earlier) the lambda sonde adjust fuel mixture to more lean, for the right cylinder no problem but for the left one too lean. with pinging as result at hot days and accalerating from low rpms in higher gears
Agree? True?

valve adjustment

Post by PV »

All
Last weekend performed valve adjustment,
adjusted all valves to a loose drag of feeler gauge.

Vibes between 3500 and 5000 almost gone.

It runs great on every rpm.

Thanks for your advice.

:D

Indeed, great job done.

Before it accelerated harder close to 5000 rpm and up, but now it accelerates more smooth all through rpm till 7k+.

I didn't notice untill I watched my speedometer and when I accelerated together with a Suzuzuki GSX R 750.

Thanks again for the advice.

Started up my '04 today.... did some side street riding and got onto the highway for work....

and the vibes were magicaly gone!

I couldn't explain it, I kept looking down at my rpm's to check my engine was still even running.

Weird, I can't even explain it.... it was night and day, and I haven't touched the bike mechanicaly since I last rode it and it vebrated.

Now, my bike didn't have excessive vibrations before, but today, on the highway, at 90mph and around 5k rpms... my left mirror was just as still as the right was... I could read license plates behind me....

Weird.
