Cause of engine stain

I've been looking for a r1150r. I've seen a couple of them with the stain - circled in red. What causes that? What should I be checking if I'm going to buy one with it?

All I can say is that I have not seen it in the UK.
Fuel or oil leaks? Looks unsightly. Why don't you ask the owner?

Leaks from original equipment fuel line(s) quick-disconnect fittings. Fuel supply and return line each have male/female QC fitting pair.
It's very common problem. Search here or in any other R1150** web site to find info.
Easily fixed.

Installed a set of these this weekend.

Hardest part was pulling the old fillings out the hoses.
Twist them, pry them a bit with screw drivers, grab the old fittings with a vice grip hang onto the hose and pull/twist. Swear when needed.
Go easy on the plastic fuel lines on the other end of the hoses.

just make sure if the one youre looking at has the stain, check that it has the fittings replaced before riding it away, it could be BAD. Not a dealbreaker though.

if they havent, price accordingly, and trailer it home. "easy" fix.

Most guys replace them with metal QUick disconnects, that are 85$

I spent 3 dollars on brass tube for mine, much like this, but longer.

When I replaced my QC fittings I also replaced my actual fuel lines. fresh hoses are pretty cheap.

In the UK, indubitably MW in Meltham Bridge for replacement bits for our bikes. Like the US BoneYard, they do half a pair of metal QD fittings to replace the snapping-prone male plastic OEM one that degrades with the passing of time.
¿ Have you seen the U-Toob vid of what happens when a QD snaps en ruta ?
Has the potential to turn the rider's right leg into a fireball.
Thankfully Richard's K-bike here, was stationary on a trailer and his pal had a fire-extinguisher ready...

I'm pretty sure there was some sort of voluntary bulletin that came out for BMW to replace those. I could be wrong. I do remember taking my bike in for state inspection one year and they asked me if they had replaced the QD's but I had already replaced them myself.

I'm trying to work out how to stick in here a foto from my Photobucket library.
Mixed success so far - hitting the IMG or URL icons in the Full Editor just inserts the square-bracketed letters - copying the URL text line from the Photobucket foto does nothing except show the line, not the foto - how the **** does one do it ?

Go to photobucket and search the photo you need. Click it and when it's in full view, you will see 4 possibilities to choose from.
Click the direct string, you'll see "copied" in yellow. Done, you've got the right linkadress.
Go to the forum and go to the thread you want to make a reply.
Do not enter your text under "quick reply" under the last entry, but go to the bottom and hit the "post reply" button.
In the new window post your text and when you want to enter a photo/picture/whatever image press the "img" button and copy your link from photobucket in between and you'll get your photo.

I can even enter your picture right here.

Which is exactly how I created this post.
I really hate photobucket. But don't use it enough to endure the PITA necessary to port my image files to another online host.

I remember when one of mine snapped on my first R, an '03 that was about a yr old. Felt my right leg get suddenly cold and looked down and thought I was gonna be a "crispy critter" before I could get the bike stopped. Scared the crap out of me. Of course BMW fixed it but replaced with the same junk. I bought a set of the Beemer Boneyard units and they've been great. I put them on my '04 as well.
