Givi E231 with stock luggage rack?
Please forgive me if this topic has been covered before. I'm wondering if anyone has successfully installed a Givi E231 universal Monokey mounting plate onto the stock R1150R luggage rack. I have a Givi V46 top case mounted on the Givi SR683 bracket (specific to the R1150R), but this required that I remove the stock rack. Without the stock rack, I can no longer use the nice stock R1150R pillion backrest when riding without a top case. If anyone has made the E231 work and can explain it (with photos), I'd be eternally grateful!

???stock R1150R pillion backrest
AFAIK there's no such thing?
Unless you're going to bolt the top-case directly to the silver BMW top-plate (or a substituted flat plate which is a better idea*) then you're always going to need the Givi mounting plate.
* - the silver BMW plate isn't flat - it has a curved top surface so mounting anything to it is 'problematic'.
I took a plastic chopping board and modified it to fit to the upright supports and then bolted my old topbox directly down (ie 4 bolts going top-box - plate - uprights). the plastic plate then acts as a stiffener. (there's also a metal plate inside the topbox to stop it flexing).
Inner view - you can clearly see the metal stiffening plate and the locations of the bolts (nuts).

REALLY hard to see this - but if you zoom in you can just make out the black painted plastic plate under the top-box.

Oops, meant to say E251.
My backrest is an accessory that attaches to the luggage rack. Its bracket slides into a slot at the front of that rack and bolts in place.
E251 is a universal Givi Monokey mounting kit that holds a Monokey top case. You can see it here: http://www.giviusa.com/givi-products/mo ... sal-detail
I need to know if this kit can be mounted on the stock R1150R luggage rack.

Could you put up some photos of this and how it fits? Thanks!

Answer - probably, but with the following caveats:
> As stated - the silver BMW rack plate is NOT flat - the Givi plate may wobble or be deformed when you tighten up all the fitting screws.
> You'll scratch hell out of the silver rack - it's plastic, with 2 layers of paint on it (grey primer and silver outer coat IIRC).
> You may find that the BMW OE uprights are not supportive enough for your useage. (Personally I find them ok, Your experience/allowances may not).

Somebody on the dutch motorforum did that and started by making a aluminium subframe https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/388 ... tage01.jpg
Then made metal strips inside the topcase https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/388 ... tage04.jpg
The underside looks like this https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/388 ... tage05.jpg
End result https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/388 ... tage07.jpg
It's not a Givi topcase, but you get the idea.
I personally prefer the Givi SR683 bracket (specific to the R1150R) with the Givi E251

I did make up a bracket for that top-box (and it's BMW rack), however I found the box itself unsatisfactory - I could only fit 1 helmet in it, and even then the helmet (Arai) had to be laying on it's side to fit. The box, although very nicely shaped, simply isn't large enough.

I've got the BMW panniers and the 44l Kappa K960N, which will take (only just) two jet helmets or one big Schuberth C3 Pro.
I've had the Kappa tophalf painted in BMW Sienna Red to add a little extra.
