Hi there
My 01 R1150R’s start problem has been bothering me for a long time.
It starts extremely well when engine is hot. However, when cold start, I have to push the start button at least 4~5 times (use fast idle lever every time, no wear in cable). The starter (2 year old) works well, crankcase keeps cranking, yet the engine does not start up. And the fuel consumption is rather high.
I took the following steps during troubleshooting:
- Change of brand new spark plug, hall effect sensor, battery(Motorbatt), air filter
- Change of engine oil (10w40)
- Valve clearance checked, fast idle lever checked, throttle valve checked and cleanup
- Fuel injector checked and cleanup, fuel pump checked
But it still cannot start up properly when cold start (it is spring here).
What else is there? Is there anything to do with the Bosch throttle position sensor? Why it starts perfectly when it’s hot?
Thanks in advance.

Re: My R’s start problem has been bothering me for a long ti
There was a thread about hard cold starting about 4-5 months ago .
Found the thread, it is titled, ' SOS-R1150R starting problem ' , go back to page three of this section, fourth thread from the top .
I had the same issue with my '02 R .
The fix, is to tighten up the cable adjuster for the cold start lever on the left hand grip, I tightened mine about 2.5 turns and the cold start issue was solved .
CycleRob was the original poster for this solution, he may provide more info than I have given .
As far as your high fuel comsumption, what are you currently getting ???

Re: My R’s start problem has been bothering me for a long ti
I just worked through a surging issue and as a result I have - synced the throttle bodies, adjusted the valves, replaced the plugs (primary and secondary), replaced the O2 sensor, used fresh fuel, and FINALLY the fix was to replace the stick coils. No fault codes in the Motronic.
Anyway I have this cold start issue on my 2004 r1150r. The bike runs and starts great once warm...but I need to crank and crank to get it to fire up once cold. Battery and starter are good. My next step is to start mucking/testing the fuel injection system.
Alas, some new advice....Anybody have anymore info about the below...this might be the ticket.

I have worked on several and it is usually something subtle. On my own bike, I found that a chronically undercharged battery led to a rough first start of the day.
Do you have access to a GS-911?

No it, it's on the wish list. I might just need to buck up.
I do have a DIY fault code reader that one can use to count the stored Motronic faults by reading pin 18. It's of limited use but a low cost option.
I adjusted the cold start cable tension mechanism; increased by 4 turns. The bike starts much easier. The idle (while cold) with the cold start engaged is about 1800 - 1900 rpm. I think this was what was needed.

Are you using the second position on the "Cold Start Lever"? if not try holding the lever in the upper position with your thumb when starting from cold. The lever is actually a "Fast Idle Lever" in the first position (the position it will stay by itself) it will increase the idle by approx 200 RPM. The second position (where it has to be held manually) is the true cold start position. My 1150 was always a little slower starting when cold.

If you can borrow a GS-911 you can check fast idle lever opening. The throttle should be open on an 1150:cnord wrote:>Do you have access to a GS-911?

0.32 degrees at idle
2 degrees mid position fast idle
4 degrees fast idle lever all the way up
I have data on many r1150s. Once set correctly they all start in 1-2 seconds on the first push of the starter.
