Sun. to Sun... 4,200 miles... Me and R1150R

I'm in San Francisco area and flew out to Ft Lauderdale to pick up a bike I purchased online

The plan was to ride it back and stop at some interesting waypoints.

While the R1150R is a little naked for this, I added a laminar lip to quell some buffeting at high speeds - it worked pretty good

Burned about 3/4 qt of oil and performed flawlessly at speeds up to a 100

The tank radius is a little small, but it's really determined by my bladder schedule and it worked out fine

I'm real happy with the bike

Thanks for the comments, it was a great trip visiting the cliff dwellings and Indian monuments and oh, the Louisiana swamp

Just great. At 75, it's my last hurrah again (did it at 70)

Exhaust? I dunno, previous owner put it on - louder than stock..

Sounds great Rags. My wife asked if that was piles of snow you were parked next to. I have the same bike and am preparing to ride from York, PA to Escondido, CA in about a month. Wife is taking a job out there and I am following along to hang out in sunny SoCal. She will leave in a couple of weeks and I'll get the house ready to rent, ship the household stuff and head west to join up with her. I'm retired so no deadline to be there. Not sure how long it will take with stops at friends along the way, but, there is no hurry. Any route/tool/accessory suggestions are more than welcome. Hoping to do a blog/trip report with pics along the way.... just have to figure out how to post pics on this forum... haven't been able to do it in the past..... advice on that is also appreciated.

Well the trip from PA will probably take you on Rt 40. I took a BSA out from NY along that route in the 70s.

Do it in summer, those Canadian cold fronts can be bitchy.

There are a few good waypoints along the way from Albuquerque west.

I'll post some trip pix, you might like to stop at a few destinations

Hey Rags. The pics were great. Looks like quite the adventure you had. This will be my first cross country trip... at least first across this country. I am looking forward to what the road may bring. Don't plan to camp at all.. but will take a compact bag and tent along with me just in case I find myself out in the middle of Kansas with no where to stay. Leaving Saturday to fly out to get the rental set up and my wife starts work on Monday. I'll come home in a week and ship the house then prepare the bike to leave. Expect to get on the road by May 1. Hoping for good weather but preparing for some not so good. I guess I have to be prepared for high winds in NM. I was out there a couple of years ago and did not experience that. A couple of tips....
1. Don't camp (or carry), you're on the interstate and they have motels - many are cheap and the hot shower is glorious.
2. If you get tired but want to go further, try putting the center stand down and grab a nap on the bike - off the interstate where the truckers are. Unbend your legs to stave off cramping.
3. Get a touring windscreen, the R1150R is pretty naked for this use. I also put on a Laminar lip to stop buffeting people complained about here.
4. If you decide to go off the Interstate for a interesting waypoint ALWAYS fill up. The published distances to NP's are deceiving. It may be 50 miles to the park but another 30 miles to the point of interest; that's 80 miles X 2 - (fore & back)= 160miles
Never bank on gas stations in towns that may have 350 population

I've been across and back a few times for IBA rides, you can do it and the best of luck
