I am the proud new owner of 2003 BMW R1150R with approximately 35k miles. I got a good deal on the bike but it came with a few hitches. The tachometer is not working correctly. When I start the bike the needle goes to 500 rpm and stays there regardless of engine rpm. I have voltage between the power wires at the gauge display, and I tested continuity back to the ignition coil on the signal wire. The bike also feels to be running a little rough in my opinion. I've changed out the spark plugs and plan to do a valve adjustment tonight, but I was wondering if anyone had any bright ideas on the issue. The tachometer issue along with a rough rumble at idle seems to point to a problem with the ignition coil, but I hate to start throwing parts at the bike without having a clearer understanding of the problem...
Any advice would be appreciated!

Re: Tachometer not working
Reck121, welcome to the forum and congratulations on the new ride.
I am also the proud new owner of a 2003 R1150R!
I once had a similar tach problem on an RT. I changed the tach and had no more problems. Electric tachs seem to work or not work without much in between.
With regards to the rough running engine, I would suggest doing a throttle body sync before changing parts. It is easy to do and often solves the problem.
Good luck,
Charlie
