So I test road a 990 adv r and 990 smt. Please explain why I should not take the plunge.

If you could own two bikes, then the answer would be simple. I would not trade my R12R away for one of these, its too good of a roadster. If I could own (2) bikes, the KTM690, Husky510, KLR650 or F650GS (Dual) would all be options. If a KTM is what you lust after, then do it. Life is too short and you can always sell it and come back to the fold if it is not what you thought it might or should be in your mind. Luckily the SMT is Black and the Adventure R is White!
Power was great as are the brakes and the short term comfort. Brake dive was something to get use to as was lifting the front wheel up without effort.
On the road, the adventure does not track as well as the Rockster which was to be expected but the SMT was quick (and a bid of an odd feeling as you sit higher).
Unfortunately I am now (and will be for some time) a one bike person. The Rockster is great for commuting, two-up travels, and most everything else. The only place it falls short is on rough roads. Making journeys to better fishing spots and remote camping a little more tiresome.
I agree that if I could have two bikes, a 640 Adventure would be in the garage. But, again, two up is important, and my future wife and I are a little on the tall side so a larger bike would be necessary.
The Adventure would obviously meet my off road needs but I may lose some on the road aspect. The SMT is obviously meant for the road, but has decent reviews for offroad use.
I do like the 1200GS as well as the Multistrada but cost makes both out of reach at this time.
