Killed a deer with the R

Riding home from Maine last night on the I90 at dusk, a deer came out of the median and ran into the left front. I thought I was done for, the bike wobbled but then steadied right out(I think bmw design saved my hide again). Looking in the mirror I saw my left saddle bag sliding down the tarmac. Stopped to collect my stuff and ck out the dead s.o.b. deer the almost killed me. The bag is totaled, both the base and lid have much damage. The only other damage is the front left air deflector is busted and the muffler has a small ding in it.
Now my questions...... does anyone know where I can get a used bag? and can the lock cylinder be swapped out?

I'd guess that the lock cylinder can be removed, but don't know how. If the base side of the bag was damaged where the cylinder is located, it may be harder. But even if the lock cylinder is designed to be not removable, if the damaged bag is headed for the trash, you could remove the interior of the bag and, using a Dremel, cut the base side of the bag apart around the lock cylinder to free it.

unlock the cylinder and start unscrewing fasteners on the inside and the cylinder comes out with some other latch parts. there are the odd used case on ebay from time to time...

Glad it wasn't more serious. You might consider turning in an insurance claim for the damage. This would go against your comprehensive coverage (not your collision) so it shouldn't be cause for a rate increase. Depending on your policy the comp deductible may be lower than your collision deductible. Call your agent for your policy specifics. I would recommend inspecting the bike carefully and then pricing out needed parts. Comparing that to your comp deductible will tell you if it's worth turning in a claim. Good luck!

+1 on what curmudgeon said. I totalled my f65GS in Missoula last August when I hit a "live" deer (it would be Collision loss if the deer was laying there dead) and indeed it was covered under Comprehensive. Nice surprise. That, by the way, is how I came to own an R1200R, so it was not all bad. Glad youi were OK. All my stuff healed up and I was riding in 6 weeks.

In Pennsylvania, they waive the deductible for a deer collision. That's one thing we lead the nation in. I normally see around 10 dead deer on every weekend ride. But I want to know if you strapped that thing to your handlebars and took it home to make jerky.

My deductible is 1000, but my rate is only 240 a year. looks like I may have to cough up my savings of premiums for the 440 bucks for a new bag. Not too bad seeing that I never had a claim on a bike in 31 years of ownership. I have always considered insurance for total loss not adjustments. But I will call and double ck if it is covered under comp, thanks for the info. Just cleaned up the bike and I am thrown back by my near brush with injury or death, and the minimal damage.......... yet I live to ride another day.

ran out of bungee cords, zip ties and tape trying to secure the damaged bag. I felt like giving it an extra boot to the head though.

I had a brand new set of OEM bags on my bike when I took up stunt riding and did a wheelie that ended badly. The bike tumbled side over side and really banged up the bags pretty badly. The plunger device that compresses against the bag mount was broken off on both of them and one of the lock cylinders came out during the accident. The mount that cradles the passenger foot peg bracket was also damaged on one of the bags.

The dealer fixed the mechanicals including the replacing the lock cylinders with cylinders keyed to my new bike. A motorcycle body shop repainted the lids and fixed the portion that connects to the passenger foot peg bracket. They function perfectly and the lids are now a very glossy black. Unfortunately, R1200R#3 is Smoked Matte Grey so glossy saddlebags don't really suit the bike but bags and bike will both be painted a different color eventually.

The cost for all of that was $600 and a two month wait. If I had it to do over I would definitely just get a new set. However, if you want to go with the well worn look and avoid the cost of having the lids painted it could be done for a good deal less perhaps. Scuffs on the lid are pretty apparent when the bags are mounted but the scuffs on the other half of the case aren't really that noticeable on mine.

Unfortunately - those aren't hexhead bags.. they are from an earlier R1100/R1150 bike. Won't fit our bike.

Ordered a new bag today. Had to remove the lock cylinder by removing the inner lining of the base, holy crow there is a lot of screws and tiny parts to these things. no wonder they cost so much.....Still counting my blessings on surviving this nightmare, the bag seems cheap when I think what could have happened. My grandmother gave me a St. Christopher medal when I got my drivers license 31 years ago, I have carried it every day since......Thanks Gram.
