Hello all, after having a set of Touratech aluminum panniers for my last bike, I'm going to go with soft bags for my new 2011 R1200R. I really like the look of the Ortlieb saddle bags (thanks to whomever posted a link in the thread I was just reading. ).
My big question now is the luggage rack. I got very fond of the aluminum luggage rack on my F800GS, which was made by Wunderlich (Touratech had a very similar one). As far as I can tell, the luggage mounting system for the 2011 model is different than all the previous models. I like that it comes with metal grab rails for the passenger, but they don't have nearly the attachment options I'd like. I know I can spend $300 for the BMW luggage rack, but in the photos it looks plastic. I'm biased against plastic for luggage racks/ passenger grab rails. Anyone have any suggestions or know of a metal rack that works with the 2011 R1200R?

Might not be warranted: the RS I rode for 13 years had plastic rails to carry the bags and the passenger grab rails. They were very sturdy. I used them to horse the back end of the bike around the garage.

I'm sure you're right. It's more of a mental block on my end.
PS- add the BMW tall touring screen bracket to the list of "yet another accessory" that the 2011 model is not compatible with. I'll be thrilled when all these companies start making farkles for the 2011's. I can't wait for Hepco & Becker/ Wunderlich engine guards that will work with the DOHC.

I'm thinking that i'll just end up with the BMW part... havent found a suitable alternantive that i like. i just got my hard cases Friday and am pretty happy with them so far
As yet there are no fitments for the 2011 R1200R from OEM suppliers however they should be coming out shortly. I spent hours in May emailing and talking to the main OEM suppliers for BMW equipment and eventually settled on Touratech but the key parts have not received TUV certification.
