Ham Radio Operators?

Curious,

Are many of the group on this list Ham Radio operators? Been thinking for a long time getting a handheld unit + license for when I travel, etc. Any thoughts/comments? Thanks.

Hey angellr,

I just renewed my amateur license last month. I have the tech license. I have thought about upgrading every now and then but never do. I have a 2m/70cm mobile unit in my Jeep and a couple of Kenwood handhelds. I mostly use them when a group of us take our Jeeps and Tacos to the Mojave. There isn't that much traffic on anything but 2m around here and most of that isn' worth joining in on. I am not your typical HAM operator. My license was purpose driven. I dabbled a little in the general bands for really long range stuff at a friends station and I just don't enjoy talking about the weather. I get some grief from "real" HAM operators but to each his own. I find them great for travelling with a group (of other licensed folks).

2m and 70cm are great for what I use it for. Good clean signals with no static like CBs. And relatively long range depending on power and topography.
