Hi
I am looking to change the exhaust can for something more fruity. The standard can sounds like a moped. Ideally I would like to keep the cat if possible. It looks like my end can and cat is all one piece. Is this normal or do they come apart?>? Have a Remus end can on the way!

Re: Exhaust change
Keeping the cat with an aftermarket exhaust will change very little -
Do it on the cheap & remove the exhaust and add a 6" downturn to the exit of the cat - plenty of old threads on that (probably more so in the R1150 threads)

Yes correct, on the 1100-models the catalytic converter (this bulky thing under the center stand) and the final exhaust are one piece. The only way to change the final exhaust is to cut both pieces apart and weld (or get it welded) an adapter onto the catalytic converter (check the dia) in order to fit an aftermarket final-exhaust. Alternative would be to get yourself an y-pipe which replaces the catalytic converter ...

Re: Exhaust change
If I was to replace the cat with a simple Y pipe and fit a light weight muffler, any ideas what that would do to the fueling requirements?
At the moment, I am very happy with my R850R, with the pink cat code plug and standard exhaust, but, if I change the exhaust I assume I'd then have to modify the mapping as well.
BTW, this is not intended to make the bike sound noisy or go faster, simply to try and reduce the weight a bit.
<sigh> With the passing years I feel that the bike is getting heavier.

Re: Exhaust change
Easy, putting an y-pipe instead of the catalytic converter won't change your fuel consumption very much. However it is advisable to also change the chip in your motronic. These tuning chips do 2 things, one is to lift the rpm limit and secondly to slightly enrich the mix. However by installing an y-pipe you should make sure to keep your sensor (the one sitting in the exhaust). Thus your motronic still has full control.
Apart of that please make sure that your final exhaust has some kind of catalytic converter installed in order not to lose power (removing the catalytic converter will result in a loss of resonance and thus in a slight loss of power).
