Picking up a new 2007 R1200R next week and have ???

Picking up a new 2007 R1200R in the next week or so. I'm in the USA. It has under 1k miles. looks brand new and starts great. Has had the 600mi dealer service.

No computer, no ABS. Been riding 30yrs and that's fine with me don't need to hear any comments :-)

It has orig battery that has been on a trickle charger whenever it's been sitting. I think I'll replace it even though it tests fine.

My biggest worry is if I have a fuel strip sensor go out, will the bike stall and not start until it's fixed even though I didn't run out of gas? Or will the sensor just not work correctly? Are the new strips lasting now? Should I replace it to prevent being stranded? Comments please.

The motorcycle is very nice and I'm looking forward to riding it. Pics after I pick it up!

My only wisdom is let her warm up a bit before running up to redline.

Like the bikes of 30 years ago the old 'reset the trip counter on fill up' is your foolproof gas estimator. Else just start and go and enjoy.

Joe, Couple of suggestions for you. No point if replacing the battery without even giving the original one a chance to do its' job. You might well get several years service out of it.

Re the fuel strip. It only serves to inform you of the tank level. So you won't get stranded. You should use the trip meter to keep tabs on your tank miles. Don't rely on the strip or low fuel light until they are proven to work well. New replacement strips are the same exact part, so no need to replace unless you have problems with the present one. As a staring point, 200 miles is a very safe tank run. So you can start there. You can get more than 5 gallons into the tank, so if you fill up at, say, 4 gallons, you know you could have made another 40 or more miles without risk. I actually use 220 miles as my must fill mileage and feel safe at that reserve level.

Congratulation. My fuel strip has been replaced twice. The bike will run fine but you will have no indication of fuel matters on your computer. You just have to estimate fuel/mileage left by putting the trip mileage indicator to zero after every fill-up. (Normally one have to gas-up at about 180 miles). No idea how much it will cost to replace the fuel strip.

Impulse buy (I'm reading into it) He rode it the first year and then it just sat.

He has lots of toys and this was one of them.

How in the world can you let it just sit....it's a thing of beauty that must be ridden!!!

I went for a @1 1/2 hr ride and absolutely loved it.

I got an '07 two years ago with 8K. Have since added 18K trouble free miles and am on original battery. No problems with fuel sensor but using trip odo is best way to determine when to fill up. There was service recall on brake lines so check with dealer to see if they have been replaced. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

On a related note...I got 5.8 gallons in my tank yesterday (with "14 miles to empty" showing on the computer). Either the gas pump is wrong, or these things hold more fuel than I thought. I've been getting 40-42mpg, so that is a nice long range.

My fuel strip seems pretty accurate so far. Bike only has 7k miles on it...

The bike is difficult if not impossible to push-start and often will not run with a bad battery. Personally, since the battery is at least 4 years old, I would just replace it. It called preventive maintenance.

If it was "my" battery from 2007 I would possibly leave it in.

I did load test it and it was fine. I will be replacing it though.

Negative, Ghostrider, only the seat. Lots of battery and other R1200R info here in the owner's manual. Good luck with the bike.

Bill - that's a great link to the owners manual. A lot easier that going out in the garage and taking the seat off. Maybe I'll read it now.

The tank does appear to be larger than the listed 18 litres (4.7 US Gal) ... lots of discussion on old threads.

I've got a few 19 litre fills and one 19.5 litre fill in (5.15 US Gal) on close to dry - no point in discussing range because range is strong correlated to the right wrist

... but you may've had a spill / faulty meter on that pump, because 5.8 US Gal = 21.96 litres: the tank doesn't appear to have that much (ie 22%) extra!! It's pretty easy to slowly and carefully pour fuel onto the ground by gently overfilling ... it simply drains away - in fact, I've learend to put te bike on the centrestand after filling, or else I get a big spill!

I've put 20.056 (5.3 US gal) litres in the tank before when the bike ran out of gas while idling waiting for a open pump. I filled to the bottom of the fill tube (as the manual indicates) but if you filled higher you might be able to squeeze another litre in. Not recommended though.

My bike has a missing evap canister (I have NO idea how that happened, yer honor...). I should get dribbles of fuel behind the left footpeg if I overfill. Honestly, I haven't checked. Will do next time...
