Source of tyres from US to Australia?

Hi there folks.

I have been looking about on the internet at the price of tyres over in the US, as compared to here in Oz.

I keep on finding folk quoting very cheap (well, by Australian standards) prices, but none of the tyre dealers seem to be able to send tyres to Australia.

Can anyone give me a pointer to a US tyre dealer who wants to send stuff to Australia, please?

As far as I know, motorbike tyres aren't any kind of restricted technology, or prohibited goods, for a US -> Australia deal.

You might also want to check-out ebay.com where you can easily see where the seller is willing to ship to. Otherwise would the US be the right place to look for tires for Australia? I mean it all depends on the shipping costs and obviously the taxes. See if I for example buy some goods in the US or Canada it does not necessarily mean that the domestic taxes get deducted. It means that I would pay the local taxes plus to import taxes and VAT applicable in Germany. Hence a purchase is sometimes more expensive than buying the same item locally.

They were one of the tire dealers I contacted.

They wouldn't ship to Oz, and suggested that I order, and pay for the tires and have them sent to an address in the US, from where they could be sent on to me, here in Sydney.

Unfortunately, I don't have any relatives or friends in the US to do this reposting business.

Here in Australia, we have a system which allows for items bought overseas to come into Australia free of import charges and GST (your VAT?) so long as the value of the item is under a thousand dollars, Ozzie.

Shopping from the US is the easiest option for us, as we have no language problem, apart from spelling tyres, that is, and the current exchange rate has our dollar almost interchangeable with the US dollar.

Also, because of the small size of the market here, some less common sizes of tyres aren't easily available, an example of this is the back 160/60 18 tyre for my R850R. Last Pilot Road 2 that I bought, I had to wait for several weeks until it became available.

I've been quoted just under $300, for a pair of the Road 2s for my BM, from tiresunlimited, while the nearest equivalent, Pirelli Angels, will cost me $495 for the pair, locally, so there is a fair amount left for postage.
