It pays to shop around, even with the online dealers. The listed price (which they usually stand by) often varies by 10/15 percent. When I bought my rear rack the price that Chicago listed negated the discount they offered.

Pasties on bare breasts doesn't qualify as "dressed" in my book.
I'll take naked with pasties any day or "fully dressed".

Yeah..."naked bike" to me means "no fairing." I want a windwhield for longer days, but I don't want a big plastic cap over the front of my bike. A naked bike with a big windshield is a classic look.

The screen is great for freeway and cold weather riding. But you can take it off anytime you like. Two screws. This bike looks a lot better without the screen than an RT would.

After two attempts, I have settled on a 22" Cee Bailey shield with no tilt---yet. No turbulence to speak of. Nothing new there. I would just caution anyone contemplating a Cee Bailey that there suggested sizes on the website are a bit off. By their chart my 5'6" height should have required an 18" screen. Way too short. The 22" is right at the mouth level and works fine.

I am also short and shorter of inseam. Can I ask your pants inseam length? I know there is a discussion about whether we should be talking the actual inseam vs that used for buying garmenst but I think we all know our pants inseam. I have a 29" inseam so think I am shorter of legs than most at 5'-8".

I called CeeBailey about the possibility of leaving off the flipped up upper edge. I like to keep my air flow somewhat "laminar" by keeping the screen laid back as much as possible and am not sure if the theory of their edge design really works that well in practice, at least from what I've read here (adding lifting blocks and such). I got my GS air management worked out best by getting a taller than recommended screen height and leaning it back while lifting it a little to allow air to fill the negative pressure zone behind the screen. I just performed the non-scientific test of feeling the air around the screen. The more it was laid back the less buffeting. I think the more vertical the more you will get air tumbling off the top. I could never get the air clean on my H-D Road King, just too much air tumbling off the top of the near vertical screen. Anyway, CeeBailey said that they would not modify their screen and it was designed that way for a reason.

I don't mind cutting off the flipped up edge (CB said 1 1/2" to 2") and cutting in some holes like CalSci (maybe NACA duct like?). So now I am at figuring out whether I should start with a 20" or 22". It appears from this post that maybe I should go with 22" (maybe 24?).

Anyone gone down this road with a CeeBailey?

I had the CB 22" on my last R1200 R. On the replacement bike, I went for a 20". I think I was better off with the 22". I'm 5'8" with a 29" inseam.

And it is do-able. My CalSci tall screen, tilted back and with SAENG swirl edging is close to perfect, allows me to whistle a happy tune while riding open-face at 85mph no earplugs, and with full-face and earplugs its even quieter. I'm 6'1", 32" inseam, high seat, and I'm looking well over the top of the screen. And I rode 100 sunny miles today in unny Southern Cal!

Thanks for the feedback. You have confirmed my line of thinking as prompted by Cubdriver's comments.

I will take a leap of faith and I will order a 22" and see if the screen works as CeeBailey designed it. If I get bad air tumbling off the top and it's tall enough I'll cut it down and see if losing the edge helps, if it is too short I can swap it out for a taller one and keep trying.

I still have 2 windscreens from my old R1150R, 2-3 from my R1150GS Adv., and 4 from my R1200GS. I have several from the wife's F650GSs (2). I know it can be a challenge but CeeBailey has always provided the best results. I used to start small and go up, now I start pretty big.

Before ordering a shield from CalSci, I went out to a parking lot today with a yardstick, tape and pencils. Taped the yardstick to my touring windshield, with the top of the screen at the 14" mark of the yardstick. One potential glitch in different makers' screen height charts is that nobody seems to put 0" at the same place. Some say top of headlight; some say bottom of stock screen; some say height above the front of the tank. Some don't say at all...

CalSci specifically references their screen heights in relation to the touring shield at the 14" height mark. That makes direct measurement useful.

I then taped pencils crosswise to the yardstick at 21" and 22.5" -- medium and tall screen heights. A few laps around the parking lot and I determined with certainty that I'll get the 22.5".

After much money and lots of BS it was all so simple and it was all on the forum.

Tilted Don C block and California Science XL 25 inches. I am about 5 foot 9 or 10; 29" inseam; low comfort seat which is same height as standard.

Got it all on tonight and went for a quick freeway run without ear plugs. It was pretty good. So on this ride I put my hand at my neck and under my chin and blocked the wind....wait a second lots more quiet.

This fits with what Mark at Cal Sci told me...that the wind noise comes up from above the knees and below the windshield. While you can't really see it without looking, there are two vents cut into the bottom third of his screen and he obviously put some research and development into the screen.

So then I came back to the garage and rooted around and found the chin wind blocker that came with the Shoei RF1100... Installed same and went for second ride with chin blocker and ear plugs....WINDSHIELD LOVE.

It ain't RT quiet but I think I'm there. No matter your height, I would recommend the XL or one down if you are short; Mark will cut height off if you ship it back to him, but I'm good at XL 25 inches; I can see above it and it's not anywhere near as obtrusive as the very rectangular barn door 24 " Parabellum. As Mark points out, the tilt takes an inch off the height.

I also think the R and D is head and shoulders above Cee Bailey. Thanks to XPROF who rides the same shield. As I said, all the info was here on the list....I just had to be stubborn.

I will probably leave this shield on most of the time. For real summer, I'll run the 20" Cee Bailey or the BMW tall touring shield.

But now I can see comfortable runs to Vegas, Palm Springs, Northern California....slab is not great but to get to these places there is slab...

I visited Mark in person yesterday. Tried the tall. Not good. Put on the Xtall with the tilt block. Very, very nice. I sit up a bit higher (5'11" and a tall seat) and can still see well over it. I can spot the ground 25' in front of the bike.

It's not an RT, but at least I can relax on the freeway. The ride home was MUCH nicer than the ride out there!

On that 90 minute ride home, I put my hand in various spots down at the front of the tank. That is definitely where the remaining turbulence is coming from. These bikes definitely need some sort of tank wings if you want them touring-bike smooth.

Last night, I rolled up a stiff canvas painting tarp and draped it across the tank in front of my tank bag, to simulate a lower windshield fairing or tank wing...WOW! That made things twice as smooth and quiet. Going to have to think about how to create such a thing for long trips.

Welcome to the "windshield-satisfied" club ContraMoto and SDMAX! I'm happily doing 500-mile days with mine, and it's no longer air blast that makes me quit. And thanks to DBRICK and excelcyclewerkes.com for the o-ring grips idea, which has cured my case of "claw-hand" and almost made my Throttlemeister irrelevant. Keep experimenting with that airflow-around-the-tank thing, Contra, and let us know how it goes.

Thinking more about tank wings...I figured that, on camping trips, I'll just roll up my tent and ground tarp (without poles) into a long narrow drybag I have and bungee it across the tank in front of the tank bag. Heck, I gotta carry it somewhere. Might as well have it working for me.

Parking lot steering would be a little tricky! But I tried it on the curvy roads and the bars don't come anywhere near to interference, even on some pretty aggressive swerving.

Still...the more I play around with this, the more I'm convinced it's a naked bike best left alone. The only screen option I'm still considering is a Parabellum Scout. But, that's a bunch of money and a major style commitment.
