Right heated grip doesn't

Post by Shortpower »

My right heated grip has stopped working. Before I start tearing everything apart, does anyone have any ideas. The left grip works--maybe too well like it is getting all the juice. Could some moisture have gotten under the grip and shorted something out?

Re the left grip getting too hot ... I was going to say that's probably in your head as the heat's going to be set by the voltage and thus the current draw ... but with all those spifty electronics BMW has put everywhere...

ANYway, if the BMW heated grips are anything like the ones I've had on other bikes, my guess would be that one of the wires connecting the heating element to the grip broke. In my experience (and the BMW may be different) the heater's on the outside of the throttle sleeve, so there has to be a movable connection someplace. Since the wires connecting the RHS heaters get bent - a lot! - and the LHS heater contacts never do, the RHS is far more likely to fail.

I'd guess against moisture, mostly because the bikes are designed to be ridden and parked in the rain, and mine at least has gotten really soaked with no adverse effects.

Good roads,

I had the same grip go out on my R1200S.
I pulled it all down and found that the very narrow wires that heats it up was broke.
There's only 3 wires that are wrapped around the underside of the grip.
It's very hard to seperate the hand grip from the under spool, so I ordered it complete.
You can buy a replacement from BMW spares. If still under warrenty let them do it!
Once you pull it down you will see how very sensitive it is all under there.
Look it's not easy to do, so unless you are very machanical and tolerant don't do it
your self.

On my 2007 R1200R with 30,000 miles the right hand heated grip has failed just when I need it most! Seems like it should have lasted longer (always garaged). Is it the wiring or the grip? Is it difficult to replace the grip?

Any help would be appreciated.

Over 15 years I've had to replace two heated grips and two flasher switches. I think they're like light bulbs. Some last forever, some not so much. As dealer repairs go, they are not that expensive.
