New Guy...

Post by ipokebadgers »

I have been lurking for months and finally joined the site and tonight I introduce myself. I live in Central CA and have been looking for a R1200R for a while. I presently ride a 2000 K1200LT because my wife likes the comfort and I really enjoy her riding with me. We bought the LT used two years ago and have put 12K on it since we have had it. It is a great bike. My first BMW was a 1978 R100S. I bought it used with 60K on it. I sold it with over 160K miles on the clock. I have never been able to get the boxer out of my blood. I really like the looks of the R12R as it really reminds me of my old S.

A couple of days ago I found a 2009 R1200R at a dealer 4-5 hours away. I called this morning and talked to a sales guy I had emailed and he was with a customer. By the time he called me back the bike had been sold. I was prepared to make a deal over the phone. It is the closet I have been to finding what I want since I started loking seriously. I am bummed but will continue to watch. Spending time on this forum just makes it worse. A friend doesn't really understand how I (or we) can look at the photo thread and drool over the pictures. Says they all look alike. Blasphemy!

So I will ride a naked RR vicariously through this forum until I can park one in my garage next to the LT. I knew I could probably find commiseration here. Man I wish there were such a thing as forums back when I was wrenching on my R100S. I really enjoy and appreciate this forum and have learned a lot about the RR.

Welcome. It wasn't the bike in Santa Rosa was it? The bikes are not very hard to find. Here's one:

eBay has a one or two for sale too. There's an 07 with no reserve there now.

Don C, I sent a message on cycletrader.com and am going to call A&S about that one Tuesday. The one I called about was at Brown Motor Works in Pomona. It was a 2009 with a sport sheild and BMW luggage along with heated grips and ABS. That is exactly what I am looking for. It was less than the one at A&S also.

Sunny, I saw the ebay bikes. Not sure I am ready to buy a bike on ebay.

I guess I have been looking too local. I am just now looking up to 400 miles or so. Basically in CA. I sure haven't seen many on the road. My wife and I ride to the Central Coast often and we see a lot of RTs GSs and a few LTs. I got passed by one of the 1000RR superbikes but no R1200Rs. I have a daughter and son-in-law that live on the coast 100 miles away. I use that as an excuse to head that way, not that I need an excuse.

I will definitely watch more closely now.

Thanks

Hi and welcome. Your not kidding about not seeing a lot of R12R's here in so cal. I've only seen a grey one like mine twice. Don't be afraid of ebay. I've bought and sold a few vehicles with no problems at all.

You know, I have purchased a car *and* an R1200R (had it shipped) off of eBay. Just exchange information with the seller and get on the phone and talk. You will get a good/bad feeling right away before you plunk down the $$$.

Look nationwide, get the best deal possible, and then ship it out to you ($800 roughly).

Best wishes.

eBay may actually be safer than other methods unless you buy local. It has some fraud protections. I bought mine there. A lot of them are still warrantied etc..
