Pannier Lock service Bulletin

Post by BigEasy »

Ok so I'm cheap and didn't buy my side bags with my bike. I sniped the only set I've seen for sale on this site a couple of years ago and the short of a long story is I've never had them rekeyed to match the ignition. I have a 4 day trip to eastern Kentucky planned for next week so got to thinking I'd do it myself, then procrastinated my time away.

I dropped the things off at the dealer this morning and the service manager was like "yeah about an hours labor and we'll have them knocked out". I called at lunch and they were done, and the rekey was done as part of a service bulletin, my cost= $0.00 =D>

Evidently this service bulletin covers all bags up to some date in June of '09 and covers recoring the bags because of "inferior" locks. The service mgr wouldn't give me a copy of the service bulletin "for my records". The invoice does list the labor as : complete SB 46 002 09 (043).

On my bags the little metal link that causes the handle to pop up fell out. That was a huge pain, it took me several hours to fix it. I'm wondering if that is the problem fixed in the service bulletin.

I'm not sure Don. I remembered that quirk on my way home from work yesterday. On the service order/invoice the service mgr entered something to the effect of "customer reports handle/lock difficult to operate" (I did not mention this). I didn't think much of that thinking that that complaint needed to be entered to qualify for the bulletin. I rarely used the bags before I took them in and figured the rough operation of the handle was a function of lack of use to break them in. When I got home and put them on the bike they were butter smooth in their action.

I have no idea if there were other components besides the core that were replace but it wouldn't suprise me based upon the before and after operation.
