Oil leak out filler cap

Changed oil and filter on '04 R1150R, 35K total miles. There is a bit of oil coming up through the filler cap over 3000 rpm. I'm guessing the cap, O-rings, etc. are just worn. Shouldn't be an oil overfill issue as the Clymer's manual called for 4 quarts with fluid and filter change.

The first thing to attempt is to thoroughly clean all the surfaces on the o-ring and the filler cap gasket to see if that stops the problem. That used to work for me for a long time when I had the same issue.

When that no longer kept the oil from seeping out (and a little oil can look like a big mess!), I replaced the whole works at the next oil change. Not too hard to do and there is a description somewhere on this board. And the reason for the leak was obvious when I pulled the part out of the valve cover. The 'hidden' o-ring had completely disintegrated and was a gooey mess!

Easy fix. And the parts don't cost much. There are some cool after market options also, if you want to spend the money and do something different.

There are two portions with o-rings, the one inside the head and the cap. Sometimes the one inside the head becomes loose and needs to be removed, cleaned and re-installed.

I was always worried that the cheap and poorly designed OEM filler cap would fail on the road or that some malefactor would take it (or worse, dump something in and replace it). If the cap failed or went missing, you would be stranded until you could seal things up. And if someone decided to put something in the sump, there could be thousands of $'s of damage. So for peace of mind, I bit the bullet and replaced the OEM cap with the one from SW Moto. Though pricey (~$60), it is a much better design and tamper-resistant to boot.

I replaced the bottom piece and the two o-rings and reused the cap, see what happens this afternoon. Silly design but across the models the RT's would be a pain in the ass to add oil to with all the bloody plastic in the way, cie la vie.

If it fit I'd just get another right side valve cover and put it on the let jug and add oil somewhere on the block and be done with the leaking scenario. Although it was a cheap fix considering BMW parts.

That plastic part has a life span much shorter than the bike.

I got one of these from my since departed dealer. Keylocked and worth it.
