My R1100R dies when steeing wheel is turned to full left!?!?

Hello: Every time that I turn the steering wheel all the way to the left, the engine on my R1100R dies abruptly -- as though someone pulled the plug on it.
This appears to me to be an electrical problem. However, recently, I adjusted the valves and synchronized the carbs on my motorcycle.
Has anyoen heard or experienced a similar problem? Any suggestions?

Yes, I think I may have found the source of my problem. Last night, after I posted the original message, I took the headlight off and started wiggling the wiring harness that is secured to the streeing column with tie-straps. Apparently, the wiring harness is getting damaged by either rubbing against the streeing column or by being pulled, as I turn the handlebars all the way to the left. The outer sheath of the wiring harness is already cut through in couple of spots.
So, today, I will have to pin-point the individual wire(s) that is damaged and repair it.
Well, I learned something new last night and I was able to solve my own problem. I am surprised to encounter this problem with my 2001 R1100RL, since it only has 12,500 miles on it!

Hello Hamid,

where are you from? What you describe is a commonly known problem. Zip-ties too tightly closed cause wires to (invisibly) break and the symptoms as described by you. This is a mistake from the factory which might pop-up sooner or later ...

Hello Oliver:

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my question. Yes, I had an invisible break in one of the wires right by the steering column. The wiring harness was rubbing and bending against a bolt that holds the mounting bracket for the horn.

S0, I spliced the wire, used electrical tape and new tie wraps to restore the integrity of the wiring harness, and moved the wiring harness away from the streeing column.

Yes, this was definatly a poor design and/or workmanship from BMW's part. Oh well, It is fixed now.

I love my R1100RL. Since it is a naked bike (it only has a Givi windshield) it is so much easier to work on it. Everything is expsed and easy to reach.

The bike is back on the road again. I just came home from a test drive (I went grocery shopping with it).

I was born in Iran and moved into the United States in 1977. I have lived in Denver Colorado ever since.
