So is the OEM topcase rack necessary for touring?

I guess I would believe a retailer who has to give a refund rather than a manufacturer or importer. Interesting point of view though.

Perhaps 'importer' was the wrong term - they are also a retailer and stock and sell the whole range of SW Motech stuff so they, too, would be in the position of having to refund if an item were not as described. I have bought a lot of SW Motech gear through them over the last few years and would normally trust their opinoins regarding compatibility. Maybe they've not sold many R12R racks so haven't come across the compatibilioty issue - the bikes aren't common in the UK.

Am I reading this wrong or are you asking about the top case rack and not the top case?
I have the rack but not the top case.
Different things appeal to different people.
The practicality of the rack appeals to me but the top case does not.
I camp quite allot with my bike and I would hate to have to make do without my rack but I just hate the way the Top Case looks and so I would not have it on my bike.

I tried threading the Rok straps with the side cases still attached. It looks like I need to remove the side cases and then thread the straps through the mount.

Bill, no problem. It would be difficult to get them through with the cases in place. One they are in place, the cases go on just fine. I don't bother taking them off since you never know when you're gonna want to strap something to the pillion seat..
