Where do you hide your extra key?

You don't need a spare key. Just leave your key in the ignition all the time. I've done it (except at motel room stays) for over 6 years and all over this country and Canada, and never once did my bike get stolen. If you're not comfy with that concept, get one of those BMW roundel key heads and attach it to a "sawn-off" key top. That's what we describe in black ops as a "stealth key".

Hi Boxer, the only problem which would refrain me from following this suggestion is that in our part of the world the insurance pays nothing IF the bike gets stolen with the key ... Alongwith the bikes comes a smallish flat key which I have in my wallet when being on tour.

Like I posted, I leave mine in while in stores or eating but take it out while moteling or leaving it overnight somewhere. It truly hides well with the little roundel thingy but no need to tempt fate!

Here's how the spare key in the boot thing worked out. Picture this:

Seat bag loaded, toted out to m/c, strapped in place (in the rain), rain fly attached, bungie-net in place (did I mention it was raining), Camel-bac mounted on top o'the pile and secured. Back in the room, packing tank bag... Oh, where is my dang room key? Oh, where is my dang motorcycle key? Hmmm, must of packed them both up in my street clothes, located in the middle of that seat bag (remember, it's raining out there).

But good thing I got this spare key in my boot. Just off with the riding pants and off with the boot and voila! We are good to go.

Oh, yeah, I found my main key right after that---when I picked up my tank bag, there it was hiding out.

My spare key is attached to Boxer's ignition key and my bike has never been stolen either.......

Per above comment I have a pickup and bike key taped in my wallet where a slot is provided for keys. I use paskage tape to make sure they are fixed. My new Tundra key was smaller than the main one but still too large for the wallet so I ground the plastic from the head(careful there's a chip in there!!!) to make it thinner. The real problem is the newer style keys for cars/trucks that are way too big for hiding, not to mention the ridiculous cost! Side topic-I build wrecks and some mfg's/dealers are now refusing to make a key for a branded title vehicle.

Plastic zip tie the spare key to any part of the frame you like. You will want to paint it black or silver first to prevent rust.

If you don't keep the spare anywhere but on the bike, it won't do you much good if you forget what the key is in.

Isn't this the whole point...if you lost the first key, chances are you will lose or forget the second one. If it's secured to the bike, it will be there when needed.

Just remember to put it back............

Up to this point I've subscribed to the Lean Manufacturing ideaology; don't lose the one you use.
In 36,000 miles over 37 months the only losses I've had were when it was in the seat lock or side case and I didn't realize it.
Knowing that there is an available spare on-hand would seem to lessen the emphasis on keeping the first one.

My personal experience is that leaving it in the bike has been OK. The first year I had the bike I was forever leaving it in the side-case lock; but times are tough these days and more folks may be tempted to liberate something now than in the past.

Having read the preceding posts, I'm thinking of where I might stash mine.

Guy I bought my m/c from told me, "that's where you should keep your key when your looking for it".

HEY EVERYONE! This one is too easy. I bought a flat head spare key from the local BMW dealer. Along with that, they sell a velcro envelope. It has a fold-over flap to enclose the key. The backside has adhesive - just stick it under the slim plastic fairing that runs from the tank along/under the edge of the seat. Whenever you need the key, just reach under and open the velcro flap and slide out the key...just that easy.

Wow, great idea. I'm now doing the same thing, except the velcro pouch is in my boot. But your idea had even more generality---no boots needed. Tx.

+1 The flat spare key from BMW sits in my wallet which I take with me whenever I go out - on foot, in the car or on the bike.
Even with my wallet in my hand - let alone in my back pocket - I can't feel it.
It was only reading this post that reminded me it was there.
Yep there it is!
