Any one running one of DDM Tuning's HID setups on their R1150r? I've got a buddy that is installing one of these setups on his F800ST this week and I was thinking about doing an upgrade on the RR.

Re: DDM Tuning HID
I'd never seen these before but they're pretty impressive looking. I may have to give it a try. The RR's H4 is pretty wimpy. A 55w 5000k HID might just be the ticket for spotting roadside deer at 1000 yds.Westy wrote:Any one running one of DDM Tuning's HID setups on their R1150r? Thanks for the link.
I don't get caught in the rain, I ride in it on purpose.

I was thinking ths same thing. I'll see how the install goes Thursday evening and I'll post back the results. It looks like a simple enough install.

Re: DDM Tuning HID
I think I'd install the components back by the battery someplace as their instructions say to put it in a cool dry place. I don't know if I want to install it inside the headlight shell. Might get pretty hot in there. My choice will be the 55w 5000k setup I think. A bright white light. Is there any reason to use the other temperatures ?Westy wrote:I was thinking ths same thing. There's another recent thread floating around with info on this, but to sum up: the higher temps 'look cool' but the human eye isn't as sensitive to bluer light as it is to yellow (the eye sees best in the light colors that the sun outputs). 4300K or 5000K are your best bets.Airman wrote:I think I'd install the components back by the battery someplace as their instructions say to put it in a cool dry place. There's also a long-running debate whether a HID bulb in a Halogen shell puts the light in the right places due to the differences in the geometry of the HID arc and Halogen coil. Some say HID in a halogen shell will either throw too much light into oncoming drivers faces or light up the ground immediately in front of you (or both), neither of which is very good for safety and seeing into the distance. Other say it doesn't matter. I don't have an informed opinion, so it's best to do a little reading and decide for yourself.

I think that's the same setup I'd go with, not much reason to go any higher on the temperature scale. My question is where to mount the ballast, there might be room for it within the headlight housing but temperature might be a problem. Back up under the tank somewhere next to the battery might be a good place as you mentioned, as long as it's not in the way of tank removal.
Keep me posted if you decide to proceed with this mod!

Re: DDM Tuning HID
The install when smoothly on my buddies F800ST this past weekend. It took a little over an hour but most of that was spent removing his fairing, deciding on where to run the wires and mount the ballast. The actual install was very simple.
He went with a 55w 6,000 bulb which was a touch too much on the blue side for my likings. It lit up the road well and there is no doubt he's running an HID when you seeing it coming at you or look in your mirror but I believe I'll pick a bulb with the 5,000 rating.
