fitting second hand remus/ touring tyres
gday, looking for some info regarding fitting a remus exhaust. it is second hand and in excellent condition but I have no info on fitting it. I got the y pipe and oval alloy muffler for $700 australian dollars. I'm thinking thats a good price? Also has anyone run touring tyres on their rockster and if so what would you recommend.

I bought a second-hand Remus Revolution (Ti) and a new Keihan y-piece... I found it relatively easy to fit with the exception of having to use some stainless band as the existing clamps wouldn't tighten sufficiently.
I also found the heel guard wasn't a good fit so adjusted that, which looked much better afterwards i thought
I also put a spacer in between the the point where the can mounts onto the bike; It was just a little too flush up against my panniers. In fact, I do need to look at that again some point soon...
Actually, thinking about it on the Keihan y-piece the stock bolts that secured the old CAT didn't fit. The long bolts are threaded at the end, but on the Keihan replacement the thread doesn't continue for the full length so I used a couple of stainless replacements.
As far as tyres are concerned, there's lots of info / threads on this site you can search (exhausts also) ; but I tend to favour Pirelli Diablo Stradas on my bike; they're Grrrrreat

cheers for that \\Mike_Lea//. I pick the remus up on monday. the seller said that their are clamps that come with it. The seller didnt have panniers on his bike so I will take care to make sure there is plenty of clearance when the pipe is fittted.
cant wait to hear what the pipe sounds like as I havent actualy heard one yet.

You might run into problems removing the stock muffler. It doesn't always pull off easily when you have loosened the clamps.
If you get stuck you will need the following tools
1 pair of mole/vice grips and 6 x 440ml cans of beer.
The clamp on the back of the heel guard sometimes stays shut tight after the nut is loosened. If so use a pair of mole grips/vice grips to squeeze the clamp open. Unscrew the nut till it's just past the end of the threads. Place one jaw of the grips on the nut and the other one on the end of the clamp closest to the nut then squeeze the clamp open.
I had trouble removing my muffler recently. I spent 2 hours pulling, twisting, swearing, hammering, swearing, levering, swore some more and gave up. I went in the house had a beer and thought about, had another and thought some more, had a third and light dawned. So I had three more beers and returned to the garage. Using the mole/vice grips/beer method I had the muffler off in two minutes.
Tyres I use are Bridgestone BT 020 On my 3rd set now, good grip in the wet (we get a lot of rain here in scotland) and good balance between grip and wear.

I'd say something around the 6k miles mark I reckon; they're fantastic in my opinion and have been used in every situation bar a track-day and performed brilliantly.thanks for the info on the pirelli stradas, hadnt even considered trying them. how many ks/miles are you getting out of the stradas
What Hank's saying is spot on; I had some problems getting the pipe off; easier with two people actually. One to "jiggle" it and one to hit/pull it. Once you've got it so far it's does come off much easier. I do seem to recall the heel guard was a pain to free actually, but with some coaxing (and a few beers
The combination of my Remus revolution and the Keihan y-piece sounds fantastic. With the baffle out I thought it was a bit too much, buts maybe that's down to personal preference. I don't like drawing too much unwanted attention to myself
I also think the bike feels much better with the y-piece 'n Remus on; revs free-er, feels livelier and stronger. All in all great!!!!!

hi \\Mike_Lea// and hank, thanks for the info. I got my self 12x375ml stubbies as there are two of us doing the job tonite. just had a look at the oxygen sensor and am wondering whats the best way to undo it
.can the cat come off first or will I end up ripping the wire of. cant fit an open end spanner in the space
went to the local tyre shop and got prices for both the bridgestones and pirellis. the bt020 have been superceded for bt121 and are worth $329 for the rear and $230 for the front. the stradas are $315 rear, $220 front. the tyre shop guy said he would sell me bridgestone bt 54R for $450 fitted but have not heard about them. he also said the metzler roadtec 6 were a very good tyre as well for the price of $309 rear $215 front. prices are aussie dollars and thats fitted and balanced
when I stared road riding you could get a set of tyres for under $200 for a KR250 83 model. that was then and this is now
well its time to skin some knuckles

have just finnished fitting the Remus y-pipe and muffler and I must say; If you have a mechanically minded friend, it dont take long at all. We still had beer left over
I was expecting it to be a headache, but everything came apart and went back together beautifully
took the cat and muffler off and cleaned everything. used 1000 wet and dry sand paper to get rid off all the crap on the outside and inside of the y-pipe and muffler then used manuseal when we joined the whole lot togther.the bmw clamps didnt tighten up enough around the muffler or y-pipe so we took a spacer out of the bmw clamps to make them fit. could not detect any blow bye at all.
there is enough wire to spare when you take the cat off the bike. i thought there wasnt enough but there is. havent tryed to put the panniers on yet but there looks to be enough space.
and the muffler was titainium too, not alloy as the sellar said. still cost me the same so that was cool
AND it sounds WICKED. i will have to park the bike in the shed and not on the back patio so i dont disturbthe rugrat.
got to love a wife that lets you buy a loud exhaust system

Well sounds like you've had some fun
satisfying mod'ing your bike isn't it, and the result after fitting the y-piece 'n Remus can is excellent; have you ridden it yet, noticed any difference apart from everyone covering their ears and running away!!
Of course now you'll be buying the power chip won't you

So which ones are you gonna go for?? Loved the Bridgestone BT020, but cant get them anymore, so went to the BT021, love them, although not quite as grippy in my opinion as the BT020.

I can't *quite* remember as it was some years ago now, but I had 020's on my Speed Triple (955i) and thought they were a little hard; It's so subjective tyre seletion isn't it and unless you're doing quite a few miles per annum not that easy to compare...Loved the Bridgestone BT020, but cant get them anymore, so went to the BT021, love them, although not quite as grippy in my opinion as the BT020.
Riceburner does plenty of miles and swears by the old Stradas....

hi \\Mike_Lea// yeah I have ridden it and I love it. revs more freely from go to whoa. turns out that the pipe is a revolution ti the same as yours. the sellar said it was alloy. I think I will go with new metzler roadtec6s but I still havnt made up my mind yet. I got about another 1000 or so ks left in the old tyres.
the wife asked why I needed a new exhaust and I was like think quick "a new cat for the bm is $2000 dear so the $700 for this one is pretty good value dont you think" crossing my fingers. She bought it. Hope she doesnt check out this site.
A power commander will be the next thing I get after the tyres but not just yet. I will have to come up with a good excuse to sell to the wife. "it will improve the fuel econnomy dear" or maybe "the old one broke dear"
Well Im going out to enjoy the sound that Remus makes and try not to upset everyone.

Yeah, I've got a Remus & y-pipe on my bike as well and love the sound. Did the swap myself and went through pretty much all of the issues listed, including the next door neighbour and beer, but it was a fun process. Enjoy the new sounding ride.

Am definatly enjoying the sound, has a nice bark to it. Not to loud but loud enough all the same. Fuel economy has gone to s!@#t though, only because I'm on the gas more
It hunts on a steady throttle a 60ks an hour and at 110 ks as well. Spoke to a bm mechanic and he said that I need to fit a power commander to fix the problem
Tried doing the fuse thing that has been mentioned and it didnt make any differance. Couldnt find a 5amp fuse in the fuse box, they were either 7.5, 10 or 15amp fuses, no 5amp in there
