I noticed when I test drove my used R1200R that the motor was nice and smooth while riding but pretty coarse while idling. The rpm doesn't vary on the tach and I never get a feeling like the motor is going to quit but it idles rough. Sort of halfway misses. There's not a full steady drumbeat. The gas tank shakes from side to side about 1/2". I can't read the small letters on the gas cap release at idle because it's moving too much. The bike was serviced with a valve adjustment only 2,000 miles before I bought it and new plugs installed.
My question is this - how much of what I notice is simply a characteristic of the bike and how does an owner decide when there's really a problem? What can an owner do to improve the idle quality?
