Tech Session #2 in Gainesville GA . . . June 27th

Post by CycleRob »

Riders that missed the first TS and any new ones that want to get in on the group for the June 27th TS-2 chime in below.

This time we will be performing the 12,000 mile service on DMM's non-ABS R1150R. Beginning to end. Then we work on the other bikes. Dave#1 is coming from Washington DC, plans to meet up with Beemeridian and ride to my place. Because of the 455+ mile distance to Dave#2's house, they'll be staying overnite Friday at my place or camping or motel. Boxer is also planning to attend again.

The same $20 entry applies and the sit down meal/drinks is included.
Someone(s) from TS-1 wanted my modified hollow muffler and bag rails. Please reply.

Rob! I know I already told you I'd attend this tech session, but the date you picked happens to be the one Saturday this whole summer where I actually planned something in advance. I have my 40th high school reunion down in Atmore, Alabama on that Saturday. Already paid for it and told my family I was coming, so I can't get out of it now without causing a family rift.
So, go ahead and let someone else have my slot.

I wish that Gainesville was closer than 2,275 miles from Somis.

Hey Rob,

If you can think of anything else that we didn't get to do my 04 I'll come down. I haven't forgot about the air and oil filter. I'll try to come down this Friday if you are going to be around and pick them up. I tore a muscle :( in my right calf so my range has been rather restricted as of late.

i'd like to go but I get off of work in the morning. Im assuming it won't be at dawn? Need to do TB sync with your magic bong, Is replacing the clutch slave too ambitious? It is keeping me up at night. would like to do my quick disconnects but $75?? Surely there is a home depot substitute solution.

sabertooth,
The idea behind the tech sessions is to learn how to DIY, which will happen with the hands-on participation in a full 12K service on DMM's R1150R. About Friday, call first. I may be on the way to pick up the bike. My spare air & oil filters ($10 ea) are reserved just for you.

combustor777,
TS starts at 10am like before . . . I should'a said that again. Doing a TB sync with my magic bong? No problem.

Yes, it may be too ambitious for a TS event because you either have to struggle with the slow process taking it out with the steel crossbar in place (ask Boxer about THAT) -OR- unbolt and lift the rear frame 1" so the crossbar can be drawn completely out of the way for easier access. I would also remove the rear wheel and the shock to make the slave R&R real easy -and- use the whole process to clean the shock and slightly over-charge any lost preload oil using this method:

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r87/ ... eload1.jpg
http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r87/ ... eload2.jpg
http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r87/ ... eload3.jpg

For your bike I'd use a small washer's thickness which will generate very little or no excess reserve oil. I bet your 2002 year shock now has at least 3 turns of do-nothing freeplay in it's preload adjuster. Check it now. Loosen the preload knob all the way to the stop, then tighten it and count the frewheeling turns before it starts to "pump" the oil.
Since you are so close, we need to schedule a private (or public?) "session" to change that slave and do the less expensive white plastic QD changeover. A 2002 model will also need new external fuel lines. You pick the date and maybe we can invite other nearby OilHead riders to the Show-n-Tell so they both "help" reduce my very low wrenching fee to you and show that same small group how easy (but involved and timely) slave and QD R&R's are to do. I will do this in another post very soon. combuster777 are you cool with my proposal?

Getting back to the TS June 27th, who else is available to attend?

Sounds like a good plan!
I just checked it, nearly 5 turns of the preload thingy before it got harder.

I highly recommend this to anyone who can make it... The first one was awesome.

CycleRob, I was the one interested in your bag rails as I have the GS rails. However I cannot commit financially at this time. :( I blame that on the new addition to the family (baby girl) due in 5 weeks, so I cant complain too loudly without irritating the wife. #-o And believe me when I say that is an understatement.

I did however roll over 20k on the odometer the day before yesterday, to think a little over a year ago she only had 6k on her!

So far for the full 12K Service Tech Session we have:
2 definites.
1 maybe.
1 cannot attend, schedule conflict.
3 that couldn't/didn't make the 1st one, did not respond yet.

At this point it's looking like the 27th isn't a good date.

I could meet you on the way. Let me know and we can set up a time/place to meet. Not exactly sure how long it would take me to get from DC to a good meeting place.
At present, I'm hoping for good weather, like we had this past weekend.

Talked to Rob. The 27th is a go. I will be heading south from central VA Friday a.m., the 26th. I know the way if anyone wants to hook up.

New Oilhead Fuel Filter Change O-Ring & Hose Clamp Kit
[remove] $6.95 Yes $6.95

Is the fuel filter really necessary at 24k since gas stations already have in-line filters? If so this is what I'm going to order, plus QD's somewhere...

Any interest in doing ABS service? I've already done mine but I could show someone how to do it.

For the June 27th full 12K service TS-2 we have:
Beemeridian
DMM (the tech session bike)

I plan on cleaning all the caliper pistons for the push-back push-out DOT4 purge-n-replace method invented by CycleRob.

Besides the 2 Daves, Is there anyone else? :-"

Haven't been on the boards lately, so am just seeing this per CycleRob's urging. I will be there. Might be looking over shoulders or getting hands dirty on other's bikes, unless Rob will let me dismantle my R12R. ;)

All Right! The weather for Sat & Sun is 69 in the morning and 90 for the daytime high. Attendees can bring shorts and a tank T shirt to change into. The ground floor garage bays will be slightly cooler than the sunny/shady cement driveway/turnaround leading up to it.

Ann says the main course is 1 alarm hamburg heavy chili with fixins and configurable grilled panini sandwiches. I may have to use force to get you guys back in the garage!

DMM, I should have the 3 oils, 2 filters and 4 plugs for your bike by then.
