Side Racks to mount Pelican Cases

Post by jeepinbanditrider »

I'm looking for racks to mount the Pelican cases I bought for my KLR to my 1150R. I found these

http://www.casporttouring.com/store/mer ... =BMW_R1150

but I'm not 100% if they will mount becuase they say they are for the GS models.

Any help on telling me wether these will mount or if someone could point me to a rack that will work will be greatly appreciated.

It depends on the mount points. Have you checked at ADVRider Forum? I had a set of Happy Trails racks similar to the GIvi ones you show in that link, but they were attached to my F650GS. They make several models and you could try them.

From looking at those Givi racks, depending on the rack frame bar size, you could use the "kit" that Happy Trails sells, to adapt any bag, including the Pelican bag, to fit. The kit consists of 4 metal pucks that rotate to lock onto the rack. And they loosen from inside the case. I sold my Pelican cases, racks and all with the F650 last month.

If you find those Givi racks work, please let us know here, as another option for good waterproof bags.

I can mount the cases myself to pretty much any rack. The problem is finding a rack that is gonna be sturdy enough for them and one that fits the bike. I know the givi will be sturdy enough but I'm not sure if those ones I linked to that go on the GS will mount on an R.

Those mounts may work as the GS uses the same basic platform as the RR. Just for fun, here's another option.

I like Caribou cases but they are WAY overpriced IMO. Over 700 dollars for a set of Pelican cases and a rack to puthem on. Makes me want to puke almost lol.

I got my Pelicans in like new condition on ebay for 116 dollars for a set of Pelican 1550s. If I can get a Givi Rack that will fit the R1150R for 150 dollars I can have Pelican Panniers for less than 300 bucks.

Actually, that's a good price for the 1550's. I think new they're at least that apiece. It looks like the Hepco Becker mounts might work too. My only complaint about the way Caribou set up their mounts was how far out from the bike the cases ended up. Plus without the bags the mounts look like bridge re-enforcing structure.

A good friend has Happy Trail mounts and rack on his R and it looks good with or without the boxes mounted. If you are looking for a sturdy system, they are hard to beat.
This is his bike, he purchased it from Happy Trails a year or so ago.

Here's the rack on a GS.

I home fabricated some mounts out of 3/8 square steel tube. Attached are 1550 Pelican boxes. They have been on the bike two years with no issues.

Nice setup. Do you ever take them off or do you just leave them on there? Any pics of the build process?

The rack is mounted to the two factory hardpoints on each side of the bike. There is a cross brace connecting the racks by the license plate. The entire rack assembly (cases attached) removes in about 20 mins. This is a standard setup -- hard points and cross brace.

The cases are mounted to the rack with a hex bolts through some flanges then fender washers with aircraft nuts. The lid of case is fixed to the rack so when you open the case your gear remains in the case.

I just leave everything bolted to the bike. Originally, I thought about using some clips to attach the cases, but never got around to it.

I don't think I have any pre-assembly pictures; the photos posted are when I first mounted the cases to the rack. I can snap some close ups if you like.

The assembly process was a cut and fit event. I tack welded the rack with a Mig machine so I could use my other hand to hold pieces at various angles.

So far it has worked great; the price was right. $200 something for both cases and $15 for the steel and $10 for the ss fasteners. I have jammed the cases full of all kinds of gear and used the rack as a tie down point.
